The 1970s changed the way we travel along the east coast. That's because the first legs of Interstate 95 opened in 1969 and additional legs opened throughout the 70s. Today, there are at least 670 exits along the highway from Canada to Miami and at least 77 public rest stops. The halfway point for the entire length of I-95 is just over the Virginia state line from North Carolina. And the halfway point on I-95 in South Carolina?
It's beautiful Santee, a spot our northern neighbors often consider to be the golf capital of the American east coast.
But for day trippers hitting I-95 within our borders, Santee offers a wonderful place to stop for a few hours, or even days for that matter... even without the golf.
In addition to the many affordable motels found in Santee for those throngs of golfers from up North, Santee is also home to Santee State Park. For accommodations, the park offers camping sites and a number of roundette cabins — some of them are located on a pier over the fabulous Lake Marion.
Whether spending the day or an entire weekend (or longer), Lake Marion and Santee State Park do not disappoint.
In fact, the lake itself doles out a number of ways to enjoy a day on or in the water.
This includes boat tours of the lake with Fisheagle Wildlife Tours.
This outfitting company has a variety of tour vessels including pontoons, skiffs, and kayaks, each offering a different way to enjoy the lake.
What's so special about Lake Marion? Everything! It's not called South Carolina's Inland Sea for no reason at all. It's one of the fifty largest lakes in the country.
From the waterlogged cypress forest to taking a boat ride through the massive locks at the dam and exploring a bit of smaller Lake Moultrie, a day on the water in Santee is filled with limitless excitement.
Before hitting the water, make a stop at one of the most popular stores ever found along Interstate 95.
Don't let the outside fool you. Smith's Super Store is anything but a regular convenience store. You'll find just about anything and everything here — and what you can't find, you'll probably didn't need anyway.
Grab some snacks and drinks for the water and maybe even a cone or a sundae from the ice cream store inside Smith's and head to the lake!
If you're hitting Santee on the weekend, then a visit to Lonestar BBQ Is an absolute must.
Step back in time and treat your taste buds to some of the best BBQ in the state at Lonestar.
And while you're in town, be sure to check out this ancient Native American mound and fort nearby!
Santee is the halfway point on I-95 of the South Carolina leg of the journey and is so much more than just a golf resort. Check it out the next time you're passing through!
