There's no denying the fact that South Carolina is positively brimming with small-town charm. No matter which region of the state you're visiting, time spent in a nearby small town is often the best way to get to know the history, people, and charms of the area. That's certainly true of Beaufort, undoubtedly one of the most charming small towns in the Lowcountry. If you've never visited before, we've included some fun and unique things to do in Beaufort, South Carolina. Trust us when we say that it's perfect for a spring day trip!
With its winding roads, breathtaking architecture, and live oak trees draped with Spanish moss, the beauty of Beaufort is undeniable.
This pristine Lowcountry town is located on Port Royal Island, which is at the heart of the South Carolina Sea Islands. It's been lovingly given the nickname of the "Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands."
The town was officially incorporated in 1711 and is therefore the second-oldest in South Carolina, just behind Charleston. However, the area's written history dates back to between 1514 and 1516, when it was explored by Spanish Captain Pedro de Salazar.
One of the best things to do in Beaufort is simply to walk around town. Some of the most popular attractions include the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, the Beaufort History Museum, Hunting Island, the Pat Conroy Literary Center, and the Penn Center in nearby St. Helena Island.
It's also worth taking an architectural tour to admire the historic homes and buildings that have been so thoughtfully preserved.
The climate of Beaufort is perhaps what makes it so remarkable. Even compared to other South Carolina towns, it's warm year-round. Spring might just be the best time of all to visit when you can look forward to blooming flowers and breezy temperatures.
So whether you visit for just a day or a weekend, you'll quickly fall in love with this crown jewel of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
