Just because you're watching your budget doesn't mean you can't have any fun. There are plenty of free or cheap things to do in South Carolina that will give you some good budget-friendly options. Now, of course you'll need to spend some money for gas unless you're looking at something locally that you can walk or ride a bicycle to. But you can find interesting adventures that won't break the bank and that everyone in your family will enjoy. Take, for example, the Market Common in Myrtle Beach, which is a budget-friendly day trip destination that checks those boxes.
At first glance, you may think, oh, but that's just a shopping center. Need we remind you that looks can be deceptive? The Market Common is so much more than a shopping center and truly has something for everyone looking for affordable things to do in South Carolina. We'll start with the Market Common Trail, which winds for over five miles with several loops around and through different areas of the complex.
Nature enthusiasts will love the beautiful landscaping and water features.
Since 2021, there's been a community-led Secret Garden open to the public (for viewing) at Pike Place Market. It's a nice, quiet place to relax and rejuvenate, with an impressive total of nearly 500 fresh herbs and vegetables donated each year to the Pike Market Food Bank.
At any time during the year, you'll find a host of arts and entertainment opportunities to enjoy. During the summer of 2024, guests can enjoy the colorful Hanging Umbrella Display. Themed “Pathway to Possibilities", each color symbolizes a unique opportunity waiting for you this season. Such a fun reminder that opportunities abound all around us!
There are often free live music events hosted at the Market Common in Myrtle Beach, SC, usually in one of over 15 restaurants on-site.
Among the other options for affordable entertainment are the Grand 14 Cinema, which sometimes offers reduced pricing weekly on Discount Tuesdays (and on special occasions such as the summer kids movies series), bowling, a museum, an escape room ...
... Pedego bike rentals and sales, and more! (Note: Pedego bike test drives are always free!)
Your kids will wear themselves out at Savannah's Playground, an award-winning, three-million-dollar, multi-acre inclusive playground where no one gets left out. There is no cost for admission.
Depending on your budget, you could always pack a picnic lunch, but there are plenty of places to eat at the Market Common as well, from donut treats to seafood (of course) to Italian ...
... to the healthy eatery, Zardin, and more.
Health enthusiasts should check for special offerings by Zardin (sunrise yoga offered during June 2024).
In fact, whenever you plan to visit, check the events calendar at The Market Common website to see what's been scheduled. You just never know what fun may be coming up, like this foam party blast from the past.
And, then finally, we get to the obvious, the shopping. If you like to window-shop, you won't spend a dime there! Or perhaps you've got a little to spare in your budget to pick something up while you're here. Some of the stores you may like to peruse while here include the Southern Living Store, Elegant Pet Store & Resort, Pottery Barn, Seacoast Artists Gallery, and Uncommon Chocolatier, just to name a few.
So the next time you're looking for a great day trip destination in the category of free or cheap things to do in South Carolina, consider the Market Common in Myrtle Beach, 114 acres of fun, budget-friendly activities!
Have you been to the Market Common before? For shopping or a special event or perhaps something else? We'd love to hear your experience!
