In San Francisco, nature, food, alcohol, hiking, and sports are serious business. If you live here, there are a few things you have to do before you can be considered an official San Franciscan. Roughly 360 days a year it will be too cool to reasonably necessitate AC. And that bay breeze can create some intense wind tunnels on particular streets that are guaranteed to cool you down. If you're expecting sun and heat, Fog City may not be your town.
It may be warm in the Embarcadero, Mission, or Nob Hill, but if you venture to the Marina and especially toward the westside like the Sunset you'll be glad you had that extra layer. San Franciscans are always prepared for a quick temperature shift.

Long known as the spot for the best cheap eats in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, this local institution has been open since 1912, although it got its current name, location, and distinctive appearance in 1940. This beloved diner feels frozen in time, and the menu is wonderfully classic and affordable. Visiting not only provides a satisfying lunch without a financial pinch, but it's like a trip back in Portsmouth's history.
Portsmouth is a wonderful seaside town, with many great things to do, see, and eat. It's one of the state's most popular towns, and that means many of its best restaurants are geared towards visitors. Great for a memorable night out, but what's one to do for a casual and affordable lunch?
The answer since 1912 has been Gilley's Diner, hidden in a parking lot in one of the quieter areas of the town. This unique old-school restaurant looks like it just stepped out of a simpler time, and the menu backs that up. The whole thing can be seen on one sheet, and not a single item on the menu tops the $10 mark or even approaches it.

The menu here specializes in burgers and hot dogs any way you like them, and you can have them topped with cheese, chili, or the restaurant's famous beans. There's also a selection of other menu items like all-day breakfast sandwiches. The most expensive items on the menu are the grilled cheesy steak (a mighty meal that will fill you up for a while) and the poutine (perfect for sharing).
