Rhode Island is jam-packed with fantastic things to see and do, whether you're a local or a visitor. But sometimes we get lured into the same old tourist traps over and over again. Fear no more! Check out some of the Ocean State's less popular spots and avoid those over-visited touristy things with the suggestions on this list.
(Don't get us wrong, Rhode Island's top-ranked tourist attractions are all worthy of a visit at some point. But you might want to wait until the middle of the week when you can take a day off of work and avoid the crowds.) Until then, take a look at these alternatives to some of Little Rhody's biggest tourist attractions.
1. Instead of the Providence Waterfire...
Frosty Drew Observatory & Sky Theatre.
Providence Waterfire lights up the night in a glowing exhibition, but you can take a look at Rhode Island's more natural night lights at the Frosty Drew Observatory. Enjoy the magic of the night sky free of charge when the observatory is open to the public. Take a peek through their high-powered telescope to catch a glimpse of views of the rings of Saturn, the Galilean moons of Jupiter, Lunar geography, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and much more. 2. Instead of the Newport Cliff Walk...
Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.
Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge is a 242-acre natural paradise. Walk the 2.4-mile oceanfront trail for expansive and gorgeous water views. You won't miss the crowds of the Newport Cliff Walk as you stroll this peaceful peninsula in Middletown.
3. Instead of The Breakers...
The Coggeshall Farm Museum.
The Breakers is famous for its unrivaled opulence but a trip back in time doesn't have to be fancy. Visit the Coggeshall Farm Museum for a rustic look at the way Rhode Island farm life was lived back in 1799. Watch reenactments, visit the animals, and tour the exhibits as history comes alive right at your fingertips. Address: 1 Colt Drive, Bristol, RI 02809.
4. Instead of the Crescent Park Looff Carousel...
The Flying Horse Carousel.
Little Rhody has a number of carousels to visit but the most historic of the bunch often flies under the radar in the small coastal village of Watch Hill. The Flying Horse Carousel is believed to be the oldest continuously operated carousel in the country but that's not its only claim to fame. The horses are suspended by chains from the center giving the rider the feeling of flying through the air while riding. Address: 151 Bay Street, Westerly, RI 02891.
5. Instead of the Touro Synagogue...
St. Ann's Arts and Cultural Center.
The Touro Synagogue is the oldest standing synagogue in the nation. Built in 1763, this historic site is quite incredible but if you're looking for a visual treat head to St. Ann's Arts and Cultural Center. This center preserves the former church it is housed in and also is home to the largest collection of Frescos in Northern America. Feast your eyes on the incredible artwork as your tour the center. 6. Instead of Mohegan Bluffs...
Whale Rock Trail.
Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island is one of those fantastic geologic wonders that can't be denied. But exchange the long staircase for a quaint boardwalk trail at Whale Rock. The secluded boardwalk winds through the greenery and leads you to an isolated rocky beach. Bring a picnic and enjoy the wonderful coastal scenery without ever having to board the ferry.
