Rhode Island was one of the original 13 colonies in America, meaning it's brimming with history spanning centuries. And while we have plenty of charming historic towns here in the Ocean State, we can't think of a better spot for history buffs than North Kingstown. This small town is big on preserving the past, and there's evidence all over town.
North Kingstown is a small town in Washington County, a rural contrast to Providence's bustling streets.
North Kingstown is actually part of the Providence metropolitan area, but you'll feel like you're in a different world when you visit.
We aren't kidding when we say this place is brimming with local history.
North Kingstown has a long list of historic districts and landmarks.
Wickford Village is the most well-known historic spot in town, and it's absolutely delightful.
Named after Wickford in Essex, England, it features one of the largest collections of 18th century houses in the Northeast.
The Old Narragansett Church, which was built in 1707, is the oldest Episcopal Church building in New England.
And as you can see, it is remarkably well cared for.
The Hamilton Mill Village Historic District is another wonderful historic district in town.
Located on the south side of the Annaquatucket River, it has two wood-frame mill buildings and a lot of old mill worker housing units.
North Kingstown is the birthplace of Gilbert Stuart, a famous portraitist from the late 1700s and early 1800s.
It's also home to Casey Farm (pictured here), which dates all the way back to 1750.
North Kingstown is a charming place -- and even if you're not a history buff now, you will be when you leave.
You really can't help it when you visit this town.
When was the last time you got to explore North Kingstown?
