Rhode Island may be small, but that doesn't mean that all of its best spots are well known. In fact, we have a lot of awesome hidden gems in Rhode Island just waiting to be discovered. From shops to lighthouses and natural wonders, this road trip only requires an hour and 24 minutes of driving and will take you to some of the state's best, but most unknown sights. You'll only spend about an hour and a half driving, but it's always smart to come prepared. After all, road trips are more fun with snacks and beverages!
1. Fantastic Umbrella Factory, Charlestown
We will begin our trip with a stop at the Fantastic Umbrella Factory. In the warm weather, the gardens bloom with a variety of perennials that are utterly awe inspiring. However, even in the off seasons, this complex of buildings has fun grounds to wander, animals to visit, and a multitude of shops from which to buy anything you can imagine. Offering range from local sundries to handmade pottery.
When you visit, make sure to stop the by the general store. Here, you'll find tons of unique treasures like hand-made gifts, tasty nostalgic candies, and toys for the little ones! If you're a fan of vintage clothing, stop by Frills, a colorful store that celebrates the funky soul of the '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. Small Axe Productions sells a multitude of unique gifts, gorgeous clothes, and musical instruments.
Best of all, when night falls, the area shimmers with twinkling lights. It'll fill your heart with happiness. It's no wonder it's one of the best things to do in Rhode Island!
2. Point Judith, Narragansett
Our next stop is Point Judith, a small cape off the coast of Narragansett. This adorable village often gets overlooked as it is the location where the Block Island ferry sets out, but Point Judith has much more to offer than that. Gaze at the gorgeous lighthouse, visit the nearby park, or just wander around taking in the gorgeous ocean views and soaking up some sea air.
Eager to explore one of the best places on Port Judith? Just head over to Fishermen's Memorial State Park. This gorgeous area spans 91 acres and is both peaceful and historic.
3. Wickford Village, North Kingstown
Just a 20 minute drive from Point Judith is Wickford Village. This village was originally founded in the 1600s, and to this day retains a large amount of its old world charm. Stroll the streets dotted with delightful shops and restaurants, and make sure to check out the harbor for views of ships. There is even a historical walking tour you can download right on your phone to teach you more about the village. Visiting this scenic area is like taking a step back in time.
If you visit during winter, you'll be met with jolly atmosphere and holiday cheer. This enchanting town really knows how to celebrate! You may even see a few carolers strolling about. Believe us, it's one of the most unique places to visit in Rhode Island.
4. Windmill Hill Historic District, Jamestown
Your shortest drive yet is the 11 minutes to this gorgeous area in Jamestown. Windmill Hill historic District is mostly made up of awe inspiring rolling hills and pastures. When you encounter the windmill you will feel as though you've stepped into a pastoral painting of times long gone by. Want to see one of the most beautiful places in Rhode Island? This place might take the cake.
5. The Bells, Newport
End your day admiring the remains of a once great mansion that are waiting to be discovered in Brenton Point State park. The Bells was built originally in 1876, and all that remains now is the slowly crumbling stable. While the grounds are not safe, even admiring these ruins from afar is a truly inspiring experience.
Some even say that Brenton Point State Park is the most haunted place in Rhode Island! You may even encounter a few ghosts while you're there.
