Fall is coming and we are less than a month away from seeing some color change around the city. Plan one of these quintessentially fall day trips in Portland and beyond and capture all that the season has to offer. From changing leaves to pumpkin patches to apple picking, you are going to love fall all the more when you add one of these fun events to the itinerary.
1. Mt Hood Railroad
The fall excursions trip on the Mt. Hood Railroad is the the thing that fall dreams are made of. Choose from a 2 or 4-hour trip, and sit back and enjoy the fall foliage show from Hood River to Parkdale. While smoke in the area from forest fires has cancelled some trips recently, the fall foliage trips are still scheduled to run as of now.
2. Silver Falls State Park
You are going to want to plan on an entire day to explore this park. Beautiful in the fall, hike the Trail of 10 Falls for some impressive sights, or take the South Falls or Lower South Falls loops for an easier waterfall excursion. Either way, this is a spectacular fall hiking destination.
3. Apple Picking in Parkdale
Nothing says fall like crisp apples straight from the tree. Head to Kiyokawa Family Orchards to pick your own apples and experience this fall rite of passage first hand.
4. Sauvie Island
This is the place for fall fun, especially if you have children. Between pumpkin patches, corn mazes, cow trains, and petting zoos, the many farms of Sauvie Island pull out all the stops when it comes to fall fun on the island. Head to Kruger's, The Pumpkin Patch, or/and Bella's Organic Farm to enjoy a farm day done right.
5. St Helens Halloweentown
St Helens comes alive with fall fun during the month of October to celebrate Halloweentown. This free event includes a Spook Shuttle, Underworld Waterfront, pumpkin patch, and live entertainment throughout every weekend of the month to celebrate the place where the Halloweentown movies were filmed. Enjoy the small town vibe at this fun and frightful festival north of the city.
6. Breitenbush Hot Springs
There is nothing like a trip to hot springs in the fall. The perfect season for soaking, Breitenbush offers an escape into the woods just when you need recharging most. While the resort is currently closed until September 25 due to smoke and wildfires, you can make reservations for after that date when the fires are expected to be contained.
7. Willamette Valley Wine Country
There is no better time to visit wine country than the fall. The vibrant leaves throughout the valley are exquisite and the cooler temperatures make it so pleasant. Enjoy a day trip to McMinnville, Amity, Dundee, or Dayton for a fun day tasting your favorite wines and enjoy the bounty of the harvest.
8. Tillamook
There is no better time to explore the coast than in the fall when the crowds dwindle. Spend the day combing the beach, taking a hike or just enjoying the view. In town, try a locally brewed beer and delicious food at one of the many small spots to grab a bite before heading back to town.
