When Portlanders want to head to the Gorge, Hood River is the most likely destination on a day trip, however, this sleepy bedroom community should definitely be added to your day trip goals. Just 75 miles from Portland, Lyle, Washington takes just over an hour to get there, and once there, the beauty of this picturesque small town may make you never want to leave.
Loaded with epic, sweeping views of the Gorge, Lyle is a perfect respite when you just want to get away from it all.
Home to just over 500 residents, you are likely to have plenty of peace and quiet wherever you go.
If you want to spend the day fishing, the Klickitat River is the perfect place to find a spot.
Freight trains heading through the Gorge pass by, making it a great place for train lovers to catch some amazing photos.
The Catherine Creek Trail, The Tom McCall Trail, and Rowena Plateau are all great hikes in the area that will give you some amazing views of the Gorge.
The Cherry Orchard Trail is also notable, if you don't let the warning sign scare you from starting.
Basically, anywhere you go in Lyle, you will have some of the most secluded terrain and amazing mountain views.
In the summer, Lyle, like Hood River, is an epicenter for water sports so be sure to plan ahead.
When your tour of the natural beauty is complete, head to one of the areas several boutique wineries, turning out some of the best wines of the Gorge. Cor Cellars, Domaine Bouillon, and Klickitat Canyon Winery are all great to visit and will make your trip all the more memorable.
