These are eight small rural towns near Pittsburgh you'll definitely want to visit.
1. Saxonburg
Experience the pure charm of small town America when you visit Saxonburg in Butler. The rural town, which dates back to 1832, looks as though it belongs on a postcard with its picturesque Main Street dotted with shops like the Antique Store in Saxonburg, Friends of the Library Used Book Shop, and Mimi's Memories and delightful eateries.
2. Volant
Embrace rural life in a tiny town - of less than 200 residents - when you venture to Volant. Set in Lawrence County, Volant is surrounded by the Amish countryside, providing the ideal opportunity to learn more about Amish life. Volant itself, which was founded in 1784, welcomes visitors to stroll down its idyllic Main Street, to browse the towns 20 shops, and to dine at one of the two restaurants.
3. New Wilmington
Only four miles from Volant, New Wilmington also finds itself surrounded by the lush Amish countryside. For a unique experience, climb aboard an authentic Amish buggy for a firsthand look at the Amish countryside. And, be sure to stop by Banks Covered Bridge, the perfect spot for photographs.
4. Farmington

5. Saltsburg

6. New Alexandria
Discover an outdoor paradise when you visit the rural town of New Alexandra, home to Loyalhanna Lake National Recreation Area. The recreation area offers a plethora of activities for outdoor enthusiasts, including hiking, biking, and camping. 7. Smicksburg
Smicksburg is perhaps one of the area's smallest rural towns with only 45 residents. Known for its annual Old Fashioned Country Christmas, the tiny town boasts such unique restaurants and shops as Smicksburg Pottery, Smicksburg Country Store, Old Tyme Diner, and Windgate Vineyards.
8. Grove City
Shoppers flock to Grove City for its sprawling outlet mall, which boasts dozens of shops and restaurants. If you prefer a quieter experience, head to Olde Town Grove City. The old-fashioned town features a movie theater with a single screen, shops, and restaurants.
