No other city in the United States can compare to Pittsburgh. The Burgh lays claim to a rich history, amazing people, and an assortment of unforgettable and unique aspects. Here are only 10 – of many – reasons that Pittsburgh is the most unique city in America.

1. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood…

Generations of America’s kids learned some of childhood’s most valuable lessons watching Mister Rogers. Perhaps one of Pittsburgh’s most famous and well-loved icons, Mister Roger’s television show kicked off way back in 1968. Today, he’s remembered all over the city, including with his own statue on the North Shore, his shoes on display at the Children’s Museum, and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood at Idlewild Park & SoakZone.

2. All hail the robots!

You don’t have to travel to Tatooine, Hoth, or Endor to meet R2D2 or C3PO. Just head to the Robot Hall of Fame at the Carnegie Science Center. Founded by Carnegie Mellon University in 2003, the Robot Hall of Fame also pays tribute to such memorable bots as Wall-E, the Terminator, and Huey, Dewey, and Louie.

3. Six Super Bowls, anyone?

Really, what else needs to be said? Who’s up for a seventh title in 2018?

4. Two words: Terrible Towel

Other sports teams have gimmicks. Not the Steelers. The Terrible Towel is a treasured tradition started by the late great Myron Cope in 1975. Steelers fans don’t just wave their Terrible Towels at games and in front of the TV on Steelers Sundays. They travel with them, representing Pittsburgh all over the world.

5. Would you like fries with that?

Well, this actually could count as two reasons Pittsburgh is so unique. We lay claim to Primanti Brother’s, the restaurant that tops its sandwiches with fries and coleslaw, of course. And, not far away in Irwin, lies the home of McDonald’s Big Mac which, of course, goes great with a side of fries.

6. It’s a pierogi paradise.

We, Pittsburghers, sure do love our pierogis. Especially when they’re homemade. And, there are no shortage of them in the hometown of the Pierogi Festival. Pierogi food trucks, Polish delis, and even a pierogi bar are just some of the places to get your fill of pierogis in Pittsburgh.

7. So many steps (712 to be exact) and…

Thanks to author Bob Regan, Pittsburghers can boast about just how many steps we have. That would be, according to Regan, 712 individual steps that total more than 24,000 vertical feet. Think we have a lot of steps? Well, you’ve not seen anything yet.

8. Bridges (that’s 446) and…

That’s right. The Burgh beats out Venice, Italy with its 446 bridges. That’s a whole lot of bridges, even compared to Venice’s 400 bridges.

9. The steepest street in America.

10. Oh, man, that view!

Let’s end this very short list of reasons Pittsburgh is the most unique city in America with perhaps one of the most fitting. That gorgeous city skyline. Not many other places can top it. Steal a glance from the top of Mount Washington, at Point State Park, or emerging from the Fort Pitt Tunnels.
