Embark on a creepy day trip to Altoona, perhaps the most haunted town near Pittsburgh, where you will have plenty of opportunities to experience the paranormal. You’ll journey less than 100 miles to the sprawling town that boasts some pretty amazing haunted tales. Off we go to uncover the tales behind three of the most haunted spots in Altoona.

Mishler Theatre - 1208 12th Avenue #206, Altoona, PA 16601

A landmark in Altoona since 1906, The Mishler Theater attracts visitors for its family entertainment and its ghostly spirits. The most prominent spirit is said to be that of Isaac Mishler, the founder of the theater who died in 1944. Numerous guests claim to have seen the apparition of a man, sometimes in vibrantly colored hats, wandering through the theater.

An avid cigar smoker, Mishler frequently announces his presence through the faint smell and sometimes the billow of cigar smoke in the theater itself. Yet, when the individual goes to investigate the cigar smell or smoke, he or she sees no one at all.

Visitors to the theater’s lady’s room also claim to have seen theater guests dressed in early 1900s attire.

Horseshoe Curve Tunnel

Most drivers likely wouldn’t give a second thought to driving through the Horseshoe Curve Tunnel. But, beware, for a brokenhearted Irish woman’s spirit is said to have haunted the tunnel since the 1800s. Her tragic story is a bit murky with some claiming she was murdered as she waited outside of the tunnel for her beloved to return from work while others say her beloved was murdered as she waited for him in the tunnel. Regardless, her spirit is said to still roam the tunnel today.

You may smell the distinct scent of sulfur lingering in the air as you approach and enter the tunnel as the Irish woman in white appears, angry that visitors have invaded her space.

Drive through the tunnel if you dare then look to the side of the road when you emerge from the darkness for you may see the apparition of a heartbroken woman in white next to a spruce tree. Pull over to the side of the road, when it is safe, and check your windows. Do you see handprints on the glass? They’re said to be from the young Irish woman.

Altoona Railroaders Museum - 1300 9th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602

Delve into the history of the railroad industry in Altoona or discover the museum’s haunted past. The popular tourist attraction is also home to the ghost of a man named Frank. Frank’s been seen by just about everyone who’s worked at the museum and countless visitors. He often hangs around the train engine in the museum’s lobby and in the elevator before he disappears into a puff of smoke.

Frank is the most popular spirit in the museum but not the only ghost who’s said to live there. In fact, you may have heard many stories about different paranormal activities at the museum, including laughing children long after the museum closed and big band music playing from the bar in the museum (but no one’s there).
