There are no shortages of wineries near Philadelphia. New Jersey and Bucks County are home to several vineyards that offer good wines and beautiful settings. One small, remote winery near Philadelphia stands out above the rest though: Amalthea Cellars in Atco, New Jersey. The attention to detail in winemaking here is unlike any vineyard I've toured, and the history behind the farm and the founder make this the most charming spot for a winery day trip near Philly.

The historic farm has 10 acres of vines growing to be cultivated and produces 5,000 cases of wine per year.
Vines were first planted here in 1976. Founder Louis Caracciolo began making wine when he was young with his grandfather, who brought the art over from Italy.
You can stroll the vineyard on your visit, getting up close and personal with the grapes that are used to make the wine you sample.
The 100 year old historic building features a carriage house tasting room where you'll sample many different varieties.
Guests can choose from either a White, Red, or Off-Dry White flight of 5-6 wines for $6 per flight, or try all three flights for just $15.
Amalthea's Green Dragon Tavern is home to their acclaimed Tavern and Tasting events.
The Green Dragon Tavern is named after the famous irish pub in Boston, and Amalthea's version is as cozy and inviting as the original.
The Tavern and Tasting events offer barrel samples of recent wines, special pairings, and delicious housemade food that matches the sampled wines.
These events sell out quickly - often within 24 hours - so you should keep an eye on the vineyard's Facebook page to know when the next event is coming up.
Of course, the wine is the real star of the show at this winery near Philadelphia.
Louis continued his winemaking studies in Bordeaux, France, and uses both French and California-style techniques depending on what best suits the vintage. This ensures the best possible wines, and the lengthy list of awards that Amalthea has earned proves that New Jersey's outer coastal plain can make incredible wine.
When you visit, you can sample wines in the historic carriage house or in the barrel cellar, but if it's a nice day, you can't beat sitting at their outdoor lawn tables.
Large groups can be accommodated with a reservation, which they recommend you make a week in advance.

Amalthea's inviting atmosphere, historic property, and fun events make this the perfect winery near Philadelphia for a day trip.
The tasting room is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11AM to 5PM. The staff is always willing to tell you more about their wine-as-art winemaking process, as well as explain to you the subtle differences between labels, blends, and the history behind each bottle.
I can't think of a better way to spend a fall afternoon than sipping wines and wandering vines - so Amalthea is definitely on my fall Philly bucket list!
