Remember back in the good ole days when Sundays were considered a day of rest? Maybe you were one of those people who took advantage of Sunday by taking a long, leisurely drive through the country, stopping for fresh fruit and vegetables at farmers markets along the way. Or, perhaps you just sat back and enjoyed the scenery. Relive some of that magic by journeying along one of these roads near Pittsburgh that promise spectacular views.
1. Grandview Avenue
Grandview Avenue atop Mount Washington boasts mesmerizing views of the city skyline, especially at night. Who could or would deny that? That's why it earns top billing when it comes to roads near Pittsburgh with the best windshield views. Find a spot to park the car along the road, so you can drink in the views and snap picture-perfect photos.
2. Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway
How lucky are we to live within driving distance of the Laurel Highlands? Admire the view as you drive along the Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway, a spectacular stretch of road that spans 68 miles. Drive past such popular landmarks as Fallingwater and Ohiopyle State Park as well as picturesque farm land and rolling hills.
3. National Road (Route 40)
Hit the road on part or all of National Road - Route 40 - that winds through such Southwestern Pennsylvania counties as Fayette, Somerset, and Washington. Drink in the views of the mountains and lush farmland. And,explore the small towns along the way, including Hopwood, Brownsville, and Scenery Hill as you head toward the Appalachian Mountains.
4. Lake Wilhem Scenic Byway
Cap off a gorgeous drive in Mercer County with a stop at the shimmering Lake Wilhem. The 6.4 mile Lake Wilhem Byway will take you past such picture-perfect scenery as manicured hills, sprawling farmland, and a quaint bridge. You might even spot an Amish buggy or two along the way.
5. Route 30 from Latrobe to Ligonier
Nothing's quite as beautiful as the Southwestern Pennsylvania countryside. Breathtaking views await as you travel from Latrobe to Ligonier on Route 30. Drive along winding roads, past quaint shops and rustic restaurants.
6. Five Points Road
What would a list of beautiful roads be without mentioning a covered bridge? Covered bridges offer us a glimpse into the past. Head to Indiana County, driving along picturesque country roads, where you'll find the Trusal Bridge, the shortest covered bridge - at only 41 feet - in Indiana County. Just down the road sits Harmon Bridge, another covered bridge. Both bridges can be found off of Five Points Road.
7. Fort Pitt Tunnel
Okay, so technically the Fort Pitt Tunnel isn't a road. It does, however, promise spellbinding views of the city skyline. So, it definitely warrants a mention. How many times have you had to catch your breath at the beauty in front of you when you emerge from the Fort Pitt Tunnel?
