Start making plans for an action-packed summer in the Burgh and beyond. What will you do? Cool off in local swimming holes? Zip down the slides at Sandcastle? Explore nearby state parks? Here's another one for the itinerary: Go underground on an unforgettable tour of a coal mine near Pittsburgh.
Just 87 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Seldom Seen Coal Mine boasts a rich history that dates back to 1939.
Way back in those early days, the miners used mules to transport coal out of the mine. However, from 1943 until the mine closed just 20 years later, the mine used a locomotive then a trolley system.
Today, visitors can get a glimpse of how the coal mining process works at Seldom Seen Coal Mine, which bills itself as being "a relatively intact and complete site."
So, climb aboard a trolley for an underground adventure you won't soon forget.
Enjoy a lively narrative from a seasoned guide as you head underground for the nearly hour-long tour.
Snap photos. Ask questions of your tour guide. And, learn how the process of mining and shipping coal worked.
Cap off your visit to Seldom Seen Coal Mine with a stop in the gift shop, where you can buy a souvenir to commemorate the day.
Tickets for a tour of the coal mine cost $12 for adults and seniors and $6 for kids between four and 12. And, kids under four are free.
