So many small towns and villages dot the Pennsylvania landscape, so there are bound to be a few – or more – that we’ve never heard of or have visited. That’s what makes exploring so much fun; we’re always discovering new places. This charming small town in Pennsylvania, for example, promises the perfect escape for outdoor lovers all year round.
With the motto “Where mountains meet rivers,” the darling town of Confluence offers a picturesque backdrop for a leisurely daytrip or a weekend getaway.
The small town earns its moniker for the waterways that meet near it. Laurel Hill Creek and Casselman River meet at the Youghiogheny River.
It probably comes as little surprise, then, that Confluence is best known for its many year-round outdoor activities. The 335-mile Great Allegheny Passage Trail, which goes from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland, passes through the adorable small town.
One of the best ways to explore near Confluence is, not surprisingly, along the Youghiogheny River. Kayaking and canoeing are both popular.
Confluence is considered a trail town, so you’ll find plenty of restaurants and places to stay overnight in this popular destination that’s home to nearly 600 residents.
The enchanting town is the perfect launching point for further exploration. It’s less than five miles, for example, from Ohiopyle State Park, popular for hiking, biking, and waterfalls. Bear Run Nature Preserve and Roaring Run Natural Area are also nearby.
Make sure you’re hungry when you visit because this trail town boasts some mighty tasty eateries – from the rustic Lucky Dog Café to Shepherd’s Farm Restaurant & Ice Cream Shop.
Turn your daytrip into a getaway by booking a stay at one of the local bed and breakfasts or a town campground.
