All aboard! This adventure begins with a ride on a historic train. The Sumpter Valley Railroad travels from Sumpter Depot in Baker City to McEwan and back again.
This historic railroad exists thanks to volunteer efforts by local folks that started back in 1971. After many years of hard work and fundraising, those volunteers re-opened the narrow-gauge railway on original track in 1976.
The railway also opened a replica of the Sumpter Depot in 2007. It houses a railroad museum which is worth a visit, too.
The Sumpter Valley Railway owns a number of original steam, mechanical, and diesel locomotives that date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The train car you'll ride is is also historical and renovated. Sumpter Valley Railway has rescued and restored dozens of train cars including passenger cars, refrigerator cars, boxcars, flatcars, cabooses, and more.
Hold on to your valuables, though. There's a good chance you'll experience a train robbery during your ride!
After your train ride is complete, you'll need to drive two hours to Joseph to reach your very unique Airbnb . The drive is long but beautiful, and worth it. You'll be sleeping inside a converted caboose!
The main house on the property - where your hosts live - is a historical train depot building. It was built in 1906 and was moved to this location in 1980.
The caboose is entirely self-contained. There's a bathroom, a kitchen, and room for four people to sleep comfortably.
You'll be able to cook meals in this kitchen while you imagine all that this caboose has seen.
The main bedroom is spacious. There are two bunk beds also.
The back deck is huge and is a great place to relax after your long and exciting day.
The views of the Wallowa Mountains are spectacular from here, too.
This is truly a railroad adventure that you'll never forget and it's a perfect way to spend a day in eastern Oregon. Plan your trip to Sumpter, Baker City and Joseph today. You'll love this special trip!
