Oklahoma is home to some great getaways but one of our favorites is a weekend spent in Choctaw Country. This region is located in southeastern Oklahoma and includes towns such as Talihina, Broken Bow, Hochatown, Durant, Smithville, and more. No matter the time of year, this area is filled with majestic beauty, outdoor adventure, charming towns, fantastic food, and impressive lodging options.
The southeast region of Oklahoma is known as Choctaw Country and is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the state.
A weekend away in this region will relax you in the best way possible. Start with a drive on the Talimena Scenic Byway and visit the charming town of Talihina. Fall is the best time of year to take the drive but it's gorgeous no matter what time of year.
We recommend you stay the night in one of the thousands of cabins in the Broken Bow area. Just visit Airbnb or VRBO and you'll find plenty to choose from in any price range.
This Rio Vista Cabin by Bear Mountain Lodging is one of our favorites and is perched on a ledge and offers views like none other.
Enjoy a night out on the town at the Hochatown Saloon, a country, western-themed restaurant and nightclub.
Go hiking in Beavers Bend State Park. This region is home to 9 state parks so outdoor recreation is endless.
This area of the state doesn't get as much snow as others but if it does happen to snow it's a winter wonderland and you'll love it.
Another fun activity to do in this region is a visit to the Choctaw Cultural Center in Durant. It showcases the history and culture of the Choctaw people and is a very educational place to visit.
Looking for a family-friendly hiking trail in Beavers Bend State Park? If so, check out Friends Trail! It's a 1.5-mile loop trail that opened in 2019.
