There's nothing like small town Ohio holiday cheer. With twinkling lights, cozy shops and special events, the following small towns in Ohio honor Christmas in the most magical way. While certain festivities might be altered (or cancelled) for the 2020 season due to COVID-19, that doesn't mean the holiday cheer is any less merry and bright. These small towns in Ohio are truly special at Christmastime.
1. Medina
The charming town of Medina is bursting with Christmas cheer each holiday season. Stroll through the Public Square, marvel at the twinkling lights and shop downtown for one-of-a-kind gifts. The town's annual Candlelight Walk is beloved by locals and Castle Noel attracts visitors from all over the Buckeye State looking to check out the largest indoor Christmas attraction in America.
2. Portsmouth
Deemed the Hallmark Channel’s 2019 Hometown Christmas Town, the small town of Portsmouth is steadily making a comeback. You'll find all the downtown holiday magic at Boneyfiddle's Market Square, where holiday vendors, ice skating and so much more make the Christmas season merry and bright.
3. Cambridge
Dickens Victorian Village in Cambridge is a must-see. Take a trip back in time and explore the historic downtown of Cambridge. Until early January, the town is transformed into old world England, featuring more than 80 scenes of 180 lifelike figures representing typical scenes from Victorian society and Dickens' novels.
4. Gallipolis
Where the sidewalks are lined with Christmas trees and the bandstands are decked out for the holidays, the city park in Gallipolis lights up the night. Gallipolis in Lights in Gallipolis, Ohio is a true winter wonderland during the holiday season. It kicks off the day before Thanksgiving and continues until the new year arrives. There is no admission fee and you can stroll this lovely park anytime after dark throughout the holiday season.
5. Greenville
The town of Greenville celebrates the magic of the Christmas season with an annual Hometown Holiday Horse Parade and plenty of lights up and down South Broadway Street. Shop downtown and take in all the lights, Christmas decor and window displays. (And don't forget to stop at the Maid-Rite Sandwich Shoppe for a legendary loose meat sandwich!)
6. Chillicothe
Ohio's first capital celebrates the Christmas season with an illuminated park, a Downtown Christmas Open House, a Santa House and a bright star atop a hill that overlooks the downtown. Take some time to enjoy the lights and local shopping while you're in town.
7. Steubenville
The Steubenville Nutcracker Village and Advent Market features the largest display of life size nutcrackers in the U.S., Christmas lights, vendors, caroling and more at the Fort Steuben Park. More than 150 nutcrackers will be on display throughout the park and town until early January.
8. Piqua
Even with a chill in the air, the Christmas cheer, holiday lights and window displays will warm your heart in the town of Piqua at Christmastime. Christmas on the Green and the Downtown Piqua Holiday Parade make the season special for locals. Strolling down North Main Street and checking out the local shops makes the season special for visitors passing through this charming small town.
