And, if you're looking to dive a little deeper, we've charted out some hidden gems along the way.
Here's a link to an interactive Google Map that will serve as your guide for this road trip. Ready to start exploring?
Stretching for just over 26 miles, Hocking Hills Scenic Byway offers the prime route for exploring all that this scenery-packed corner of Ohio has to offer. While the entire route can be tackled in a short amount of time, you'll find there's something to explore at almost every mile along the way.
One of the best parts about driving this scenic byway is that there's no wrong season to enjoy it: from the fiery fall foliage in the autumn to the stunning wildflowers and native flora that bloom in the summer, this drive will inspire your appreciation for Ohio's natural beauty.
Our trip begins at the intersection of state Route 374 and U.S. 33 in Rockbridge, where we'll take our first scenic detour to Rockbridge State Nature Preserve, home to the largest natural bridge in the state.
Visitors are invited to explore this stunning natural landmark by walking right on top of it! The bridge measures 100 feet and length and varies in width between 6 and 20 feet. To get there, you'll hike just one mile from the parking area.
Next up on the itinerary is a rock-rappelling adventure you won't soon forget.
One way to observe Ohio's Hocking Hill region from new heights is to take the epic rock challenge. Thanks to High Rock Adventures, you can embark on a guided journey scaling these glacial rocks. Those feeling especially brave can opt for boulder challenging, scrambles, and ascents without the security of harnesses.
While many opt to stay on the charted byway, we suggest taking your adventure a bit off-road to delve into every nook and cranny of this hilly adventure. These rugged experiences are best enjoyed with a 4x4 vehicle, such as the Nissan Frontier.
Ready for an off-the-beaten-path adventure? Wildcat Hollow Road is one of the lesser-known drives in the area, showcasing lovely farmland as well as craggy rock formations. You'll want to take this narrow road at a slow pace so you can soak in the views! Wildcat Hollow Road eventually comes to a stop sign, at which point you'll want to take a right onto Starr Route Road. Before long, you'll find yourself at Hocking Hills Coffee Emporium where you can pick up some delicious coffee and snacks for the road.
The adventure continues as you make your way toward one of the most impressive landmarks in the area, Rock House.
Located on the side of a 150-foot cliff, Rock House is the only true cave in Hocking Hills. Visitors will take a half-mile incline to reach the landmark, which will surely impress with its 200-foot-long sandstone corridor.
As the drive continues, you'll begin to observe some mystical forests surrounding the windy roads.
Photographed above is Conkle's Hollow Upper Rim Trail, a picture-perfect adventure if you consider yourself to be an adventurous hiker. This awe-inspiring loop trail will take you along the rim of stunning cliff walls.
Last but not least is one of the most thrilling ways to experience the region: a zip line excursion with Hocking Hills Canopy Tour.
Known as the first World-Class Zipline Canopy Tour in the Midwest, this adventure-filled park offers something for everyone. Even beginners are welcome to experience the thrills of soaring through the forest canopy.
If it's your first visit, we'd recommend the Original Canopy Tour, a 2.5-hour excursion that's perfect for adventurers aged 10+. From sky bridges to zip lines, this tour offers a little bit of everything.
So whether you choose to visit Hocking Hills for the waterfalls, the winding roads, or the adventure-filled stops along the way, you'll discover endless things to enjoy as you meander down this quintessential Ohio drive.
The next time you're in the mood for an adrenaline-pumping adventure marked by picturesque scenery and unforgettable activities, hop in your vehicle and start exploring! Whether it's your first trip to the region or your fiftieth, you'll find that the Hocking Hills byway never ceases to impress. And, if you're curious to explore some of the more visited destinations in the region, be sure to check out attractions like Old Man Cave.
