The Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Site is a historic site just outside Cooperstown, North Dakota.
This now-defunct military base, also known as Oscar-Zero, was built during the Cold War and held defensive missiles to be used in case of a nuclear attack.
It looks fairly nondescript from the surface, but once you get underground you will see that it is so, so much more.
You can take a guided tour down into the missile site and travel deep underground to the launch control where a fateful decision might have been made.
Well below the surface of the earth, you will reach this blast-resistance bunker with a heavily protected, thick steel door. You can also see the living quarters of the military personnel who lived and worked here when it was still active above ground.
In the launch control room, you can get up close and personal to the once-important panels and machinery that had the potential to launch a large, powerful missile designed to destroy incoming missiles and protect the United States.
This fascinating place is full of fascinating history and will open your eyes to that time in an intriguing and almost unnerving way.
The Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Site is located at 555 113 1/2 Avenue NE, Cooperstown, ND 58425. Click here for full information about hours, admission, and more.
