There aren't many true trolleys around in North Dakota. In fact, there is only one currently in operation, and it is ready to take you on a ride through one of the state's prettiest state parks and historical sites. It will take you through the natural areas, through history, and result in a delightful adventure.
Take the trolley through the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan and you'll see what I mean:
The trolley begins at a station and heads off into the beauties of the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park along the Heart River.
Along the nine mile track, you will encounter beautiful natural settings and parts like this lovely bridge.
Crossing the bridge from inside the trolley... what a unique experience!
You can see the wild grasses and plants, and maybe even some animals, from the openness of the trolley itself. It's relaxing, enjoyable, and a great way to experience the park.
You can take a nine mile round trip, or have the trolley drop you off where you can visit the historical points of interest within the park.
These include places like the On-A-Slant village and Custer's home, both of which you can enter and explore from the inside and out.
The main attraction, of course, is the fort itself and the military post, shown here with the North Dakota State Capital in the background.
Once you've had a chance to explore the sites and learn about them, you can take the tractor-drawn visitor transport back to end off an amazing day trip. It's a perfect experience for the sights, history, and the joy of being able to ride an old-fashioned trolley! You won't find another one in North Dakota, so take advantage of this!
The park and trolley are located off of Highway 1806 about 7 miles south of Mandan, ND. For more information, click here.
