Town names in North Dakota can range from pretty generic to very interesting. We have towns with names like Ellendale or Mayville, but we also have towns with names such as Gackle and Portal. Even if they have unusual names, they are still interesting enough to visit, and here are 7 of the silliest named towns in The Peace Garden State:
1. Zap
This little town in Mercer County only has a population of 273, but it made national news back in 1969 when thousands of students on spring break attempted an event called "Zip to Zap." Riots broke out and the residents were disgruntled by the huge mass of people that appeared all in one day to the otherwise quiet town.
2. Buttzville
It's hard not to chuckle at a name like Buttzville, and it really does exist. It is mostly abandoned at this point but the site and the name still exist.
3. Hoople
Located out in Walsh County, this town has a fun name that you just have to say out loud. Not only does it have the name Hoople, it also has a silly official nickname - Tatortown.
4. Flasher
Avert your eyes! Flasher is a small town of 232 residents in Morton County. Despite the name, Flasher isn't known for being a place that has many people whose hobbies include showing more of themselves than others would care to see. It's just a pleasant small town with an amusing name!
5. Concrete
The town of Concrete, North Dakota is surprisingly not made entirely of concrete! Actually, there isn't much of a town left at all. However, there is this lovely hidden gem in the townsite, a beautiful church.
6. Porcupine
Careful with this town - you might get pricked! Actually, whether or not Porcupine, ND is overrun with porcupines is up for debate. What isn't up for debate is that it is a charming town worth stopping by.
7. Deep
Yes, North Dakota does indeed have a townsite named Deep. I suppose you could say it is located deep within the state, or the prairie, but as far as deep anything else, it really isn't.
What other silly town names can you think of that are in North Dakota? Which ones did we miss? This state has quite a few unusual quirks and characteristics! Read more of them here.
