If you're looking for a day trip that's relaxing, fun, and interesting, look no further then this backroad that will take you on an amazing adventure. You'll be exploring North Dakota at its finest. Among the prairie hills of a river valley, through charming small towns, along fascinating sites and attractions, and along an award-winning route. Check it out for your next weekend adventure:
The Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway follows the Sheyenne River on a 63-mile route through the natural beauty of the area. Along the route you can find award-winning interpretive panels telling you about the drive.
It starts in Lisbon, North Dakota, a small town near the Sheyenne National Grassland. Here you can explore the local sights, grab a bite to eat, and then set off on your adventure.
The first stop is the adorable small town of Fort Ransom, nestled in the trees right next to the river. There are only 77 people in this town but it is as charming as ever.
The town is right next to Fort Ransom State Park, as well. This state park surrounds the Sheyenne River and has a historic homestead, camping, trails, and more to explore.
Just outside of Fort Ransom is this unusual sight. This pyramid-like hill has a viking statue perched on top of it.
As you continue the route you'll come across another intriguing stop, the Standing Rock State Historic Site.
Continuing on the byway, you'll eventually reach the small town of Kathryn, North Dakota. This one is even smaller than Fort Ransom at only 50 residents, all residing in the gorgeous rolling prairie hills. But the route doesn't end here!
As you continue on northward, you'll reach the always wonderful Valley City. You can take this route the other way, too, starting here and going south to Lisbon.
Valley City is known as The City of Bridges for a good reason. Here you can find many historic bridges and explore them and the rest of the town. The most notable, of course, is the Hi-Line Bridge that spans across the very river you've been following on the byway. It's a fantastic experience!
