Some people enjoy living in dense urban areas like that of downtown Fargo, while others might prefer to be fairly isolated in some of the state's near-ghost towns with populations of less than 10. However, most people prefer that perfect middle ground. Nothing too big and cramped, but also not too empty that there is no local amenities for miles around. These 9 cities are right in that range. They're the optimal quaint, yet busy small towns, and they might be just the place for you.

1. Carrington

This town of just over 2,000 residents sits in the central region of North Dakota. It was founded in 1883 and has been the county seat of Foster County ever since. It has a lively main street with plenty of small shops to visit, and you can rest assured you'll be safe living here, as it is one of the safest cities in the entire state.

2. Lisbon

Located in Ransom County, this town has been around since 1880. Today it has a population of 2,154. Highlights of the town include the Scenic Theater, one of the oldest continuously run theaters in the entire United States. It was built in 1911 and has been in operation ever since.

3. Ellendale

This quaint town is located in the southwest corner of the state and has a population of just 1,394. It has just about everything you need in a small town including a few restaurants, a local pool, grocery store, and many smaller speciality stores in the downtown area.

4. Hazen

Hazen was founded in 1913, although the post office there had already been in operation since 1885. It's just 15 miles south of Lake Sakakawea. 2,411 people call this town their home, and enjoy the many amenities it has to offer.

5. Grafton

If you're looking for a slightly bigger town that still doesn't quite cross the threshold of being urban, Grafton may be the perfect place for you. 4,284 people live there and enjoy everything it has to offer. It is also the home to North Dakota's oldest library, the Carnegie Regional Library, originally built in 1897.

6. Belfield

This little town of 800 residents is the smallest on our list, but still a great size for someone looking for a peaceful place to live. Located in Stark County, it was founded in 1883 and has the motto "Gateway to the West."

7. Casselton

This larger town in Cass County has a population of 2,329 and is just a short distance from Fargo. You can get the best of both worlds here - a quaint small-town feel with everything you need, while being close enough to the plethora of things to enjoy in the city whenever you'd like.

8. Beulah

Just over 3,000 people live in this lovely town in the west central portion of the state. It is one of North Dakota's younger cities, having been founded in 1914.

9. New Rockford

This county seat of Eddy County once tried to be the entire state capital in 1915. As we know, of course, that distinction remains as Bismarck, but New Rockford is still special on its own. With a population of 1,391, it is small yet not too small to be provide some great amenities, including a variety of restaurants, stores, and recreational opportunities.
