If you want to experience a fascinating region of North Dakota and discover the beauty of the prairie in a state where it is such a huge and important part, then you absolutely must take this vacation before you die. Located out in the unusual yet beautiful prairie pothole region, this travel spot is stunning in its own unique way. Check out the many reasons why this is a trip you don't want to miss - there are lots!
In the south east corner of North Dakota is an unusually formed region known as the prairie pothole region. It is noted for its hills and natural "potholes" turned into lakes and ponds.
This vast prairie looks stunning from the sky and from the ground, with gently rolling hills as far as the eye can see. At one point, all of North Dakota was prairies like this.
The hundreds of ponds that speckle the grasslands in this area are absolutely gorgeous, too. Especially on calm days where the water acts like a mirror to the sky.
If you want to visit this region, head over to small towns like Rutland, Havana, and Forman. All of these delightful places are right in the heart of the scenery and make for great day trip spots.
If you truly want to get out there and experience the region, check out places like the Coteau des Prairies Lodge near Havana, ND. This magnificent place offers an unforgettable stay in such an incredible area.
The lodge is near the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge, a place that preserves the spectacular views and allows for the native prairie animals - especially birds - to thrive.
This refuge is notable for being a place where upwards of half a million snow geese migrate through every year. The sight is out of this world and it makes a great time to take this vacation.
And, of course, for the North Dakota hunters out there, this region is second to none for all kinds of hunting - especially pheasant hunting. You couldn't ask for a better place for a prairie vacation!
Have you traveled to this region before? If you have, feel free to share any of your pictures with our page to have them featured! It's definitely a place in North Dakota that is a perfect candidate for the prettiest photos.
If you need more vacation ideas for the Peace Garden State, check out this road trip we made to explore the western region on the other side of the state from the prairie potholes. It's equally breathtaking in a totally different way!
