There are a lot of different and interesting towns in North Dakota. Each holds its own little quirks and characteristics, some of which we've talked about before, for example Jud, North Dakota as a town of murals. But there is one town, actually the ninth largest city in the state, that deserves more recognition. You may know of it for a certain attachment to buffalo it has, but there is so much more to this place that makes it not only a great place to live but also a delightful place to visit.
The town in question is Jamestown, North Dakota.
Jamestown is one of the oldest cities in North Dakota. It was founded in 1872, before the county it resided in existed - actually, before any official county in the entire Dakota Territory existed! That's including both North and South Dakota. Stutsman County, where it resides, was formed in 1873 and named Jamestown as its county seat.
Jamestown has both impressive history and beautiful structures to go with it.
Shown above is the magnificent St. James Basilica, built in 1882. It is one of many unique and lovely historical sites in Jamestown.
The Stutsman County Memorial Museum, or the Lutz Mansion, is another great stop to see the history of the town.
This impressive structure is open to free tours now and showcases many parts of Jamestown and the county's past. It was built in the early 1900s and has the interior of designs, artifacts, and more to match. It is truly fascinating!
Other than history, Jamestown also has plenty of other things to see, including a great Arts Center to showcase today's history in the making.
There are lots of other stores, restaurants, and businesses that make Jamestown a great place to visit and live, too, such as their most famous: Sabir's Buffalo Grill.
Speaking of buffalo, Jamestown is all about them!
Jamestown's main claim is being the home of the World's Largest Buffalo, named "Dakota Thunder." Grazing right below the hill it is perched on is a live bison herd where some of the world's only white and albino bison live.
The World's Largest Buffalo is accompanied by a museum and the Frontier Village, another awesome way to discover the history of North Dakota.
This village is full of old, restored buildings that depict what life was like back in the state's frontier days.
Many people enjoy visiting Jamestown throughout the year. Beyond the main attractions there is plenty of opportunity for great sight seeing, hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation here. Jamestown has a little bit of everything to make it unique and wonderful in its own way, and everyone should visit it at least once if they get the chance.
