2. Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Site - Cooperstown
Take a glimpse into the tensions of the Cold War by stopping by a site in rural North Dakota. While visiting here, you can go down deep underground to this vault-like place that was the launch controls for the missiles. Admission is only $10 for adults and $3 for children.
Celebrate the heritage of many North Dakotans at this beautiful park in Minot. See the fascinating architecture of the Gol Stave Church, learn about important Scandinavian historical figures, and see what life is like in Scandinavia. Admission to the park is entirely free.
This charming little town is nestled in the Sheyenne River Valley and is surrounded by beautiful nature. You can stop by the Uff Da Shoppe, one of the restaurants, or take a visit into the Fort Ransom State Park. There is even an unusual hilltop viking statue just outside of town that makes it all the more unique to visit.
Located right by the capitol grounds in Bismarck, this museum has so much to see. Everything having to do with North Dakota and its history - from the time of the dinosaurs to now - is on display. The best part? There is no cost to enter - it is free!
Behold the World's Largest Buffalo and see the real living herd of bison - including the elusive white bison - at this great stop in Jamestown. You can go inside the museum itself and see some bison history, as well as stop by the Frontier Village. Admission to the museum is $8 for adults and $6 for children.
The Enchanted Highway is the best kind of road trip stop since you can literally drive right through it. This section of highway has been transformed into an art gallery of sorts. Along the way you'll see huge metal sculptures - one of which holds a world record for size. Besides the cost of gas to drive through it, there's no fee.
We couldn't make a list of great road trip destinations in North Dakota without including the place that gave us our state nickname, the International Peace Garden. These stunning gardens are especially nice in the summer. There's a lot more to see than just this one view, too. Daily admission per vehicle is $20.
Take a look into a piece of music and television history at the Lawrence Welk birthplace in Strasburg, North Dakota. This delightful little farm is located right on the lakeside and has the original house, barn, and other farm buildings that the famous show host grew up with. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children.
North Dakota has so many gorgeous state parks across every region in the state that they are well worth a visit. From forests to lakes, rivers to the badlands, there is little bits of paradise hiding all over. These spots are great for hiking, fishing, and seeing the sights. Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. If you ask us, the North Dakota scenic drives are some of the best in the nation. For example, the well-traveled loops in Theodore Roosevelt National Park are second to none. But what about some scenic byways near me that aren't quite as experienced? The spot we're featuring today is undoubtedly one of the best scenic drives in North Dakota, taking you through gorgeous scenery and even one of the state's most charming small towns. It's a short trip,at not even an hour's drive time, but we love the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge Scenic Backway near Burke and Ward Counties.

This scenic byway in ND is only about 13.5 miles in length. Make a few stops along the route and it will make for a perfect afternoon of fun, but driving straight through won't even take a full hour.
The road skirts along all three sections of the lakes, starting at the Lower Des Lacs Lake, going up along the Middle Des Lacs Lake, and finally ending at the southern edge of the Upper Des Lacs Lake.
There are plenty of areas to stop along the way. Check out the Munch's Coulee National Recreation Trail. It weaves among the prairie grasses and offers some truly breathtaking views of the water and surrounding hills.

Of course, at any wildlife refuge, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled for some of the animals that call this place home. Beavers, porcupines, and deer are just a few of the many critters that you might catch a glimpse of here.
Mostly, Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge is known as a stopover point for thousands of migratory birds. Tons of species utilize this refuge on their migration routes, including swans, pelicans, and everything in between.
However, this drive doesn't just go through the wildlife refuge. You'll also pass right through one of the most charming small towns in North Dakota: Kenmare.
From the gorgeous natural scenery to the enjoyable small town, it's easy to see why the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge Scenic Backway is one of the best scenic drives in North Dakota.
