If you're looking for a charming spot to take a day trip this fall, we have found the perfect place! This tiny town may sound small, but it is located in the heart of one of North Dakota's biggest forests. Because of that, come autumn, it is like a painting of bright colors. Not only is its location great, but the town itself is delightful to visit and time of the year.
If you want a place to visit for the season, here is why this place is it:
Located in the Sheyenne River Valley, which is also home to the Sheyenne State Forest, this tiny town is surrounded by trees.
The town of Fort Ransom only had 77 residents according to the last census, and it hasn't gotten much bigger since. It is generally known as the gateway to Fort Ransom State Park.
Even though it doesn't have many residents, this cute little place has a few stores and a local restaurant. There is even a "Uff-Da Shop" that sells antiques and collectibles.
There is a lot of history in Fort Ransom, and along with the shops, there is even an old general store turned into a museum you can visit for a nostalgic trip to the past.
The entire town looks beautiful, and because it is surrounded by dense trees...
...it turns into a masterpiece of color in autumn.
Reds, golds, and greens fill the forest around Fort Ransom and in the state park. If you want one of the best spots in North Dakota to go leaf peeping, this is it!
As the color change fills the river valley, you can see why this town is in the best place for a picture perfect autumn day trip.
Fort Ransom is located about 30 miles south of Valley City, North Dakota.
This spot is part of our 2017 North Dakota Fall Road Trip! Click the link to see where the rest of the route will take you across the Peace Garden State for the ultimate leaf peeping experience.
