When you think of a snowglobe, what comes to mind? It's probably something like an idyllic miniature winter scene, frozen forever in time as an idealized snapshot of what Anytown, USA, ought to be like during the coldest months. Well, would you believe it if we told you that North Dakota is home to some towns that are, quite possibly, right out of a snow globe scene? It's true! Check out some of these winter towns in North Dakota that are really, truly at their best when covered in snow:
1. Garrison
Garrison is a beautiful, peaceful little town that gets, on average, about 40 inches of snow per year. That's about two times the national average! It's also known as the "Christmas Capital" of North Dakota, so you just KNOW it's going to be picture-perfect. It's home to the famous Dickens Festival every season, too, which is always a holiday-season treat.
2. Medora
Winter in Medora, North Dakota, is a special time. Much like most of the state, everything's cold and covered in snow, but even still, the hearts of everyone calling Medora home are warm and glowing. Medora is home to an annual tradition known as Medora's Old-Fashioned Cowboy Christmas, which you can read about here.
3. Grand Forks
Grand Forks is a beautiful place, receiving about 42 inches of snow every year. Few things are as breathtaking as waking up in the morning to a layer of untouched, totally-pristine snow, and you'll get plenty of that here! Every year, Grand Forks hosts its annual Christmas in the Park event, which you can read more about here.
4. Fargo
All of North Dakota is pretty snowy, but Fargo takes the cake (or should we say it takes the ice cream?) as the snowiest town in all of the Peace Garden State. Fargo sees an average of about 49 inches of snow per year - a solid several inches more than most cities 'round here do. Click here to read more about North Dakota's very own winter wonderland.
5. Bismarck
Bismarck comes in a steadfast second to Fargo when it comes to being the snowiest of them all. With an average snowfall of about 46 inches, it gets more than enough of the fluffy white stuff to provide an endlessly fun winter adventure every day for the entire season. It's also home to one of the best Christmas lights displays in the state!
6. Walhalla
Walhalla is, without a doubt, a veritable winter wonderland. There's always some kind of fun wintery event or festive activities going on, so no matter when you decide to visit, you're in for a magical time. Read more about Walhalla, North Dakota at wintertime here!
