Leaf peepers rejoice! Fall is right around the corner (whether some of us want to admit that summer is almost over or not) and the leaves are going to start to change. To kick off this fantastic trip, we're starting on Devils Lake in Grahams Island State Park. This island is full of trees that turn vivid shades of red and gold during autumn. Watching the sunrise over the lake will make it all the more beautiful.
Next stop is the magnificent forests surrounding the Turtle River in this state park. These dense trees will become a mesmerizing array of color in the upcoming months, so be sure to check it out.
This park right in the heart of Fargo has many tall trees that reflect so perfectly into the river water below, making it a great stop on our fall foliage road trip. Come fall, these will be fiery colors that make picture perfect scenes. You'll definitely want to bring your camera on this trip!
The Sheyenne River Valley has a fantastic forest full of trees that look absolutely fantastic this time of year. As the colors shift and leaves start falling, the valley transforms into rolling hills of orange, red, and yellow. There are some awesome trails through this park to see the views.
Here is the next stop on this dreamy road trip - Beaver Lake! This is a great spot to camp out or have a picnic while viewing the bright colors along the shoreline. It doesn't get much prettier than this place, especially during the fall season.
Starting the second half of the trip is this popular state park. It has a lot more to explore than just colorful leaves, and all of it looks fantastic in those colors anyways. This park is overflowing with history and pretty sights and it is definitely worthy of a stop on the road.
Located along the Missouri River, this state park has towering trees that offer plenty of leaf peeping opportunities. The trails through this park are optimal for seeing these shifting hues when at peak foliage times. Plus, this place is gorgeous year round to begin with.
This park is right on the beaches of Lake Sakakawea and offers plenty of trees to view during autumn when they are alight with color. Dreamy is an understatement when it comes to witnessing the sights at this park as we get further west into North Dakota.
Now we're getting into the hills of the badlands at this state park near Killdeer, ND. The trees are simply breathtaking at this time and they cover the hills in stunning patchwork of warm colors. It is hard to find a more pretty place in the fall.
We saved the best for last! Finishing up our road trip is this state park right in the heart of the badlands. Surround yourself by the rugged buttes, canyons, and hills that are full of hundreds of shades of gold and red. It is truly a sight to see and one that you'll never forget.

If you ask us, the North Dakota scenic drives are some of the best in the nation. For example, the well-traveled loops in Theodore Roosevelt National Park are second to none. But what about some scenic byways near me that aren't quite as experienced? The spot we're featuring today is undoubtedly one of the best scenic drives in North Dakota, taking you through gorgeous scenery and even one of the state's most charming small towns. It's a short trip,at not even an hour's drive time, but we love the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge Scenic Backway near Burke and Ward Counties.

This scenic byway in ND is only about 13.5 miles in length. Make a few stops along the route and it will make for a perfect afternoon of fun, but driving straight through won't even take a full hour.
The road skirts along all three sections of the lakes, starting at the Lower Des Lacs Lake, going up along the Middle Des Lacs Lake, and finally ending at the southern edge of the Upper Des Lacs Lake.
There are plenty of areas to stop along the way. Check out the Munch's Coulee National Recreation Trail. It weaves among the prairie grasses and offers some truly breathtaking views of the water and surrounding hills.
