North Carolina is known to have dozens and dozens of extremely charming small towns. Yet some of our towns and communities are so small they're good at keeping their quaint beauty to themselves. Each of these towns has a population under 1,000...and sometimes under 500. Using city-data I was able to discover these ten hidden gems in North Carolina.
1. Macclesfield, Edgecombe County
Macclesfield was founded between 1900 and 1901 when Henry Clark Bridgers founded the Macclesfield Company. Today, the population of 465 (2013 census) resides in the 0.5 sq. mi. area.
2. Saluda, Henderson and Polk County
Located in both Henderson and Polk Counties the town of Saluda had a population of 704 according to the 2013 census. Saluda sits at the top of the Norfolk Southern Railway's Saluda Grade. That is, the steepest standard line east of the Rockies. You can even see a genuine 19th century caboose at the train station. Seasons like fall and spring are bustling with cyclist and hikers who want to take advantage of the winding mountain trails nearby. Saluda also has an Arts Festival and Coon Dog Day.
3. Candor, Montgomery County
Candor is quite small, but not the smallest on this list. As of 2013 the census stated the population was 838 in a total of 1.2 sq mi. Yet this small town is actually peach capital! Each year the annual Peach Festival is held here on the third Saturday in July.
4. Mesic, Pamlico County
While you've certainly heard of New Bern you've probably never heard of this tiny town named Mesic. As of 2013 the census reported this small, riverside community had a total of 218 residents in 1.2 sq. mi.
5. Marble, Cherokee County
Marble is an unincorporated community located 1,680 ft. above sea level. In 2010 the census said the population was only 321 in 1.1 sq. mi. While small, Marble has gorgeous views and close proximity to hiking trails and white water rafting. If you find yourself in Marble stop by Mountain Side Diner for a delicious meal.
6. Ronda, Wilkes County
In 2013 the census said the population of Ronda was only 413 for 1.1 sq mi. This small town might be unheard of...that is unless you like wine. Ronda's shining gem is the beautiful Raffaldini Vineyards which are pictured above.
7. Stovall, Granville County
Blink and you'll miss this small town located right near the VA border. Stovall had a population of 420 according to the 2013 census. The town is only 1 square mile.
8. Caroleen, Rutherford County
In 2010 the census the population was 652 for only 1.108 sq. mi. Caroleen is considered an unincorporated community. It has plenty of charm though. This old mill dam pictured above is a quaint beauty.
9. Hayesville, Clay County
You'll want to take note of this small town. In 2013 the census said a total of 338 people called these beautiful views 'home.' Hayesville is only 0.4 sq. mi. but the Hiwassee River flows on the outskirts, adding breathtaking scenery.
10. Coinjock, Currituck
You've probably never heard of this waterside community, that is unless you've dined at Crabbie's. In 2010 the census estimated the population to be 335 for a town with only 0.87 sq. mi. While small, both Coinjock Marina & Restaurant as well as Crabbie's have great seafood.
