North Carolina has so many charming, small towns, it can hard to break it down and decide which ones to visit. While each small town features its own unique charm, this road trip takes you through the most picturesque and historical towns we've featured for a one of a kind experience.
1. Beaufort
The road trip starts you right on the coast in the historic town of Beaufort. Deep in pirate history and not far from beautiful beachside stops, you'll want to spend more than a day here. Read why we deemed Beaufort the most southern town in North Carolina.
2. New Bern
Where to even begin with New Bern. This charming riverside town is home to so much. It has an a beautiful outdoor chapel is one of the most unique small towns and home to crucial North Carolina history that has shaped the state.
3. Bath
North Carolina's first town and port might not be packed with fun activities but it is packed with gorgeous water views and history that will transport you to the past. Not much has changed here since pirates, and even Blackbeard, called Bath home. Read more about Bath here.
4. Hillsborough
Located past Raleigh and the Triangle, Hillsborough has that small town, village vibe and plenty of arts and culture. It's home to a large concentration of authors, painters, sculptors, and artists. It's been featured in several of our articles, including coolest small towns.
5. Boone
Boone is more than just a college town, while it's home to Applachian State it's also a hidden gem in terms of mountain towns. Pop in Proper for a bite of southern food to eat, then stroll down King Street and visit various shops. Leave sometime to visit beautiful nearby locations like Grandfather Mountain...which is conveniently on your way to the next charming town.
6. Banner Elk
From Open Table Top 100 Restaurants, an alpaca farm, charming downtown, and plenty of nature all around, you'll want to spend at least two days in Banner Elk. Good news is, we've already planned the trip for you.
7. Hot Springs
Tucked deep in the mountains, Hot Springs is an adventure lovers paradise. The Appalachian Trail runs right through the town, and in less than a two mile hike, you can venture from downtown to Lover's Leap and take in all the gorgeous Blue Ridge views. Read our complete guide to Hot Springs.
8. Bryson City
Our last stop isn't a total endpoint, from here you can hop on board and experience a a train ride through the Smokies. Aside from that, Bryson City has so many attractions and great places to dine as well. Read our write up on why this overlooked town is a must-visit.
What a fun trip! This road trip can be broken up or done at once it's really up to your discretion but we suggest taking sometime to make the most of each town and experiencing the full culture offered.
