The best part about North Carolina is JUST how adventurous the state is, so life changing trips are not too hard to come by - it might just take a little blood, sweat, and thrills!
1. Jockey's Ridge
For a true Sahara experience right beside the coast, Jockey's Ridge is wildly enchanting. Activities here can range from extreme to serene - like hang gliding off the sand dune or either just walking to the top to take it all in. 2. Shackleford Banks
Shackleford Banks doesn't only have the bluest, clearest water in North Carolina, but this small stretch of paradise is home to wild horses, some of the best seashells, and untouched marshland. 3. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse isn't just the tallest lighthouse in North Carolina, but also recognized as one of the tallest in the world. It's also a classic icon for North Carolina. The lighthouse has a fascinating history and has been moved to new locations more than once. Climbing to the top will give you more than just a good workout, but some of the best views. 4. Mount Mitchell
Do you really need an excuse to visit the highest point east of the Rockies? Mount Mitchell is a paradise for 360-degree views and good for either a short day trip or a longer day hike. The Old Mitchell Trail was featured on our list of the 15 best hikes.
5. Cape Hatteras

6. Linville Gorge
When a place is deemed the 'Grand Canyon of the East' it's obvious that this destination is pretty amazing. 7. Grandfather Mountain
From a one of a kind mile high swinging bridge and black bears to hiking trails and some of the best views in the High County, Grandfather is always on everyone's must-visit list for good reason.
8. Linn Cove Viaduct
Everyone loves the Blue Ridge Parkway and it's one of the most popular driving routes not just in North Carolina, but America. What can you say though, it literally dangles you on the side of the Blue Ridge Mountains while offering stunning views and scenic overlooks. 9. Biltmore Estate
If you've lived in North Carolina for 30 years or 30 days, a must-visit place is Biltmore Estate. America's Castle was once the largest privately owned home in America, and today is open for tours. 10. Dry Falls
North Carolina is home to over 300 waterfalls, with a majority of those concentrated around Transylvania County. North Carolinians love a good waterfall swimming hole, or challenging waterfall hike, but something truly unique? A walk behind waterfall. 11. Grandfather Trail, Grandfather Mountain
The Grandfather Trail is considered a 'bucket list' hike by many. The trail includes 13 ladders of various sizes that help you scale up the mountain.
