Even though our state has the designation of being the 'North' half of the two Carolinas, it's still a very Southern place. From long-standing traditions, to our wide open arms when it comes to being gracious hosts, North Carolina is still very much a Southern place. Along the coast, there's an old, established historic district that's Southern to the very core, and if you haven't already paid a visit, then put it on your bucket list.
The must-visit town of Bath is a fantastic little spot to relax, unwind and enjoy some very Southern hospitality and history in North Carolina. From historic landmarks to the breezy coastal setting, this tiny town has much to offer. Take a look below:
St Thomas Episcopal Church is the oldest surviving church building in the state. It was built in 1734. Services are still held at the church every Sunday.
The Palmer House, located in the middle of town, is one of the oldest residences in North Carolina. You'll get a lot of that when you're visiting Bath - especially since it's North Carolina's oldest town.
You'll find a distinct Southern charm in all of Bath. The old houses, the layout of the streets and the waterfront, are all markers of a quiet, peaceful life found in the South.
With sweeping water views, the quaint little town is located on historic Bath Creek, which pours into the Pamlico River enroute to the Atlantic. It's easy to spend a quiet and slow moving Southern day just relaxing with this water view!
Every historic Southern town located this close to the Atlantic simply must possess a storied pirate history. And Bath is no exception! The notorious pirate, Blackbeard (Edward Teach) settled here in 1718 before taking up the scourage trade again and eventually getting killed in Ocracoke. His house still stands in Bath, and is a photo waiting to happen.
Thinking of visiting? You should! Historic Bath is comprised of several streets that are perfectly walkable.
