Buffalo boasts incredible architecture almost everywhere you look. From stunning office buildings to inspiring churches, our city has been blessed with the creations of some of the best architects. But when people think Buffalo architecture, one name stands out above the rest: Frank Lloyd Wright. The Queen City is home to some of Wright's most notable designs, and this day trip tour lets you discover each of them firsthand.
The All Wright All Day Tour begins at 8:30 AM at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Participants meet up at the Margaret L. Wendt Archive and Resource Center in the cemetery and hop onto the climate-controlled, enclosed Forest Lawn trolley to begin the tour.
The first destination on the tour is to the Darwin Martin House, Frank Lloyd Wright's most noted creation in Buffalo, designed from 1903-1905 and recently restored. Participants on the tour will get an extended glimpse of the grounds, which will prove to be both educational and inspiring!
The second stop on the day trip is to the Pierce-Arrow Museum, where you can view Frank Lloyd Wright's Filling Station, built in 2013 according to Wright's original 1927 designs.
After enjoying lunch at a lakefront destination, you'll have the honor of taking a look at the Fontana Boathouse, located along the shores of Lake Erie at One Rotary Row, for a tour of the boathouse and the Black Rock Canal.
The trolley then continues south to Derby, NY to the Graycliff Estate. This estate was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright from 1926-1931. Here, you'll enjoy an extended tour of the home and grounds.
The fifth and final stop on the tour takes you back to Forest Lawn Cemetery to the Blue Sky Mausoleum, another of Wright's designs for Darwin Martin. While it is believed the mausoleum was designed by the two men somewhere between 1925 and 1928, it wasn't built until 2004. You'll learn about the history behind the mausoleum while you experience how it is seamlessly built into its surroundings at the cemetery.
