Taking a look at popular destinations all around America with populations under 20,000, there are many websites that like to rank them based on where they each think the "best" and "coolest" towns are. Impressing all those who have visited, we (and lots of other award-winning travel agencies and blogs) concur that the coolest small town in America just so happens to be in New York — duh! Little-to-no shock to any of our residents, the town of Beacon, New York, is a delight and a half. Come see why.
Less than two hours north of New York City up in the Hudson Valley, the charming town of Beacon has been repeatedly called the Coolest Small Town in America... and we're inclined to agree!
Right along the eastern banks of the Hudson River, the small waterfront town features relaxing views and an abundance of modern charm.
So what makes folks choose Beacon over and over for this grand title? Well for starters, the town is vibrant, a safe haven for artists, and has a Main Street that will blow you away.
All along Main Street in town, you'll find a variety of attractions all within walking distance of each other.
To tune into the artistic side of yourself, visitors of Beacon can head to Hudson Beach Glass on Main Street in an old restored firehouse where they offer "Blow Your Own Ornaments" workshops.
But one of our favorite parts about Main Street is that it's lined with phenomenal restaurants — from amazing brunch spots, diners, and tasty dessert shops that will have your stomach rumbling.
When you're ready to venture outside of Main Street, you can head on over to Henry Street on Sundays to experience the Beacon Flea Market that's always filled with hidden gems!
While over on Beekman Street near the water you can explore Dia Beacon, a museum full of mesmerizing art that also has plenty of funky photo opportunities in store for its visitors
In town along the Hudson River, you'll find plenty of spaces where you can hang out by the water and soak in the views, with charming spots like Long Dock Park.
If walking around town didn't stretch your legs out enough, climb the highest peak in the Hudson Highlands that's in town — Mount Beacon! You'll even be able to find some historic ruins waiting for you at the top.
With so much to see and do, we're far from surprised that Beacon has been named America's Coolest Small Town...again and again.
