Looking for a reason to escape for the weekend? Head for the hills and outdoorsy fun with a stop in the picturesque village of Questa, New Mexico.
Located along Enchanted Scenic Byway in the far northern stretches of New Mexico, Questa is a picture-perfect small town sitting at the base of the Taos Mountains.
With a population barely topping 1,770, there is more to do here than you think! Let's take a look.
Questa can easily be seen as an outdoorsy paradise. One of the main attractions here is the Rio Grande Gorge, an 800-foot deep canyon.
Walk across the bridge for a peek at the river below.
A little closer to town, you'll find the Wild Rivers Recreation Area.
Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this area is the perfect way to experience the majestic beauty of the gorge. Hiking, camping, picnicking, and fishing are just a few of the things you'll be able to do here.
Another great spot for outdoorsy fun is Eagle Rock Lake.
The lake sits just over one mile from Questa's downtown area and is a picturesque destination. Small but mighty, this lake is a lovely spot for fishing or a picnic lunch.
When you're finished with adventuring outdoors, be sure to stop by the town's historic church, San Antonio del Rio.
Also known as St. Anthony's, the church was built in 1840 and has recently been restored to its former glory. The handcarved vigas, and intricate stained glass windows were all created by local artisans in a labor of love.
Feeling some hunger pangs? Stop by Wildcat's Den, a Questa staple since 1980, for a delicious lunch or dinner.
The restaurant serves a hefty menu of diner dishes, such as juicy burgers, as well as New Mexican favorites, like Frito pie and red chile.
Mi Tia's Cafe is another location to visit for a plethora of New Mexican cuisine.
It has a roadside diner feel and the tasty food will leave your tummy happy.
When you're ready for a good night's sleep, book a night or two at the Questa Lodge & RV Park.
The cabins are humble and cozy, and just large enough to sleep two. The village has a handful of RV parks, Airbnb, and Vrbo options to choose from as well.
Questa is located approximately 94 miles north of Santa Fe via NM-68.
