If Santa Claus resided in New Mexico, he'd make his home in Angel Fire, 25 miles east of Taos. With abundant snowfall, sleigh rides, and excellent restaurants, this resort town of 1216 people is the perfect place to snuggle up this winter.
The scenery here is breathtaking.
The town centers around the Angel Fire Resort, which celebrates its 50th year in business this year.
In 1966, lift tickets at the resort cost $5.50. On January 21 and 22 in 2017, the first 550 skiers or snowboarders of the day can take advantage of this retro price. Bargain!
There always seems to be some kind of event happening in Angel Fire, from music festivals to Mardi Gras celebrations.
On Christmas Eve, a torchlight parade illuminates the slopes. This is followed by a fireworks display.
The most unusual event is undoubtedly the Annual World Championship Shovel Races (February 3rd to 4th 2017) during which participants rocket down slopes at more than 60 miles per hour while perched on a shovel!
The Angel Fire Resort opens for the season on December 9th.

Dining options are more extensive than you’d expect in a town this size.
