However, Esquire Magazine has recently named another small town in New Mexico as one of the best small town vacations in America. Gallup, located along historic Route 66, made the list of the Charming American Towns You Haven’t Heard of But Should Visit ASAP. So don’t mind us...we are packing our bags and are on our way!
Gallup is located in the northwestern part of the state and has a population of approximately 22,000 individuals. When visiting this charming town, you’ll be surrounded by true beauty.
This New Mexico town was founded in 1881. It was originally established as the headquarters for the southern transcontinental rail route. Today, it is a gateway to a true Native American experience.
Gallup is rooted in its Native American traditions. Take a walk through this town and you’ll be immersed in the rich culture of its people.
This New Mexico town is known as the Indian capital of the world. As you explore, you’ll find many remarkable creations from Native American artists and creators.
If you visit during the Gallup Native Arts Market (pictured above), the Second Street Arts Festival, or the Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, much of this art is celebrated and available to purchase.
Richardson Trading Post, located on Route 66 in Gallup, is another destination where you can find hand-crafted jewelry and artwork along with many unique, rare, and odd items.

Just outside of Gallup is the beautiful and majestic Red Rock Park. The red cliffs in this park are more than 200 million-years-old and are breathtaking.
While exploring this park, hike on one of the many trails, spend the night at one of the two campgrounds, visit the museum, and more. This park is an incredible day trip in New Mexico.
When you are hungry, stop by the Route 66 Railway Café. This train-themed restaurant features homemade meals and some are even named after various trains. Your entire family will want to come back again and again.
