There are many beautiful cities and small towns in New Mexico that tend to top the list of the perfect day trip or overnight stay locations. However, there is one small town that should be at the top of every must-visit list — Cloudcroft. This small mountain village is not only an outdoor lover’s paradise during the warm months of the year, but in the winter, it offers all types of activities from snowmobiling to ice skating. Cloudcroft is truly one of the most unique towns in America.
Cloudcroft is located in the heart of the Lincoln National Forest and is easily one of the most beautiful mountain towns in New Mexico.
This small village sits nearly 9,000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by some of the most enchanting views in the Land of Enchantment.
Cloudcroft’s story begins with the railroad.
After the railroad was completed between Alamogordo, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, the railroad’s owners sent a survey party to explore the area east of Alamogordo. They found the beautiful wilderness that is present-day Cloudcroft. They named the area Cloudcroft as the word is an English description meaning "a clearing covered in clouds."
While the railroad no longer comes into this small village, as you drive down the streets, you’ll see the impact of the railroad throughout the architecture and design of the town.
Despite having less than 1,000 residents, the village of Cloudcroft welcomes thousands of tourists every year. There are all types of hiking, camping, and dining opportunities that you do not want to miss out on.
One of the most popular hikes in the area is the Mexican Canyon Trestle Trail.
This trail will take you to the frequently-photographed trestle bridge that was built in 1899 for the Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway. This bridge is 323 feet across and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
If you love the outdoors but don’t want anything too strenuous, head to the Osha Trail.
This loop trail is only 2.2-miles and is a beautiful and easy hike in New Mexico. You’ll enjoy lots of shade, gorgeous views, and a well-maintained trail. You can learn more about the Osha Trail here.
