New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the United States, so it's no surprise that sometimes it feels hard to get away! However, Garden State residents know the state is full of out-of-the-way small towns that pack a lot of charm into a little space. From one of the most famous college towns in the world, to the antique capital of the east coast, to a quiet town with a prehistoric secret, each of these towns has something that makes them uniquely Jersey. No matter the time of year, it's worth exploring them and discovering just how much is awaiting in the best small towns in New Jersey.
1. Princeton
Home of the world-famous University, the town of Princeton is home to an elite library and a popular shopping district.
If you make one stop for a snack, make it The Bent Spoon - an inventive ice cream parlor that makes small-batch frozen treats from local ingredients.
2. Keyport
A coastal fishing town with a population of just over 7,000, Keyport offers one of the most beautiful views of the water.
The best place to eat here is the Keyport Fishery, a takeout-only fish shack that serves a menu of flash-fried classics.
3. Haddonfield
A charming Camden County borough, Haddonfield is home to a historical site marking the building where New Jersey was first declared an independent state.
It's also the site where one of the first complete dinosaur skeletons was discovered - in case you were wondering why there are Hadrosaurs everywhere.
4. Lambertville
Lambertville is one of the most beautiful small towns in New Jersey, being located over the Delaware and Raritan Canal.
It's also known as the antique capital of New Jersey, and you'll be able to spend all day browsing the shelves at the various quirky boutiques.
5. Point Pleasant Beach
The heart of the Jersey Shore, Point Pleasant Beach has only 4,600 permanent residents - and each of them gets a brilliant view of the water.
The core of Point Pleasant Beach is its massive boardwalk, featuring an amusement park, beach, carnival games, funhouse, and aquarium - the latter of which are open year-round.
6. Red Bank
A stunning river town in Monmouth County, Red Bank is one of the cultural hubs of New Jersey. The Molly Pitcher Inn is maybe the state's most famous Bed and Breakfast.
The town is also home to the Count Basie Theater, a large playhouse and music center that hosts some of the biggest acts around.
