Rural is relative in New Jersey. As the most densely populated state in the country, our "middle of nowhere" is much different than the "middle of nowhere" in say...Montana. Still, we do have some pretty charming towns separate from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities. Walpack, Woodland and Sea Breeze come to mind, but they're not quite big enough for a full day of fun. Hammonton, however, is.
Hammonton is perhaps best known for being the "Blueberry Capital of the World."
Settled in 1812, this town of about 15,000 was originally called Hammondton. While it isn't near any large cities, it is directly between Philadelphia and the shore resort town of Atlantic City. The town is one of 56 South Jersey municipalities located within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve (established in 1978 as the nation's first national reserve).
Being located in the Pinelands, the town offers an abundance of natural beauty.
A good portion of the stunning Wharton State Forest is located within the town's borders, allowing for hiking, biking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, kayaking and swimming (in season). You'll also find the smaller (but still picturesque) Hammonton Lake Park, popular for birding in April and May. Enjoy a relaxing stroll, waterfront views and a white cedar swamp.
You'll also find several blueberry farms.
You can head to DiMeo Farms to pick your own blueberries, learn all about growing them, or buy them by the bush. Nearby, Blueberry Bill Farms also offers pick-your-own blueberries. Each summer, the town hosts a giant Red, White and Blueberry Festival with crafters, vendors, a car show, live entertainment and plenty of blueberry treats.
If you like wine, you'll love Hammonton.
You'll find several wineries in this town, including Sharrott Winery and DiMatteo Vineyards. Sharrott Winery offers tastings daily and tours on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. You can also enjoy free live music on weekends, food trucks and $8 wine tastings. You'll also find the Annata Wine Bar downtown, where you can enjoy dozens of wines from around the world.
When it comes to entertainment, there's something for everyone.
Head to the Eagle Theatre for live performances, comedy shows and more. You can also enjoy a paintball adventure through Gear Up Paintball, check out some art at the Noyes Museum Shop, or discover local history at the historical society's museum. There's also the Hammonton Arts Center, offering classes and a gallery. For evening entertainment, head to The Central. This local favorite has pool tables, beer pong, a jukebox and patio. Families will love the DiDonato Family Fun Center, with bowling, galactic golf, an arcade and more.
As for the dining scene, foodies will be pleased.
For authentic Mexican cuisine, head to Fiesta Mexicano. For homemade ice cream, visit Royale Crown. Grab a smoothie at the Ohana Juice Bar or dine on some of the best waffles you've ever tasted at Funky Cow Cafe. They've got sweet and savory options including the Cin-A-Pop sweet waffle and Holy Cow Sandwich on a savory waffle. The Silver Coin Diner was voted the best in Atlantic County, Corrado's has fantastic pizza and the fresh Penza pies are legendary.
