Christmas is such a wonderful time of year and I can't imagine anything better. Except, perhaps, a Victorian Christmas. Something about old-fashioned celebrations is just so...charming, quaint. If you're looking to travel back in time for the holiday season, look no further than Cape May.
Cape May is a village frozen in time.
Located at the southern tip of New Jersey, this town appears to have been taken straight out of the 19th century. The homes and manors are stunning all year but really come alive during the Christmas season. The town is decked out in lights but it's never gaudy or flashy; Cape May exudes elegance and old world charm. From trolley rides to twinkling gaslights, Cape May celebrates Christmases of days gone by - days when the holiday was simpler, less commercialized.
During Christmastime, it's an absolute wonderland.
There are seemingly endless opportunities to tour the stunning Victorian homes and hotels, all decked out with Christmas lights. Special candlelight tours include carolers and hospitality centers with hot cocoa and sweet treats. The last candlelit house tours will be held on December 16th. You'll also find a variety of lectures, performances and exhibits. Learn about Christmas traditions, take in classic Victorian decorations, see special exhibits and watch Louisa May Alcott’s Christmas at East Lynne Theater Company. Historic Congress Hall turns into a winter wonderland! There's a vendor village with all kinds of gifts (and over 20 vendors), Mrs. Claus' kitchen, a train, carousel, Santa's Workshop with storytime and complimentary crafts, and a performance of A Christmas Carol: The Radio Show by David Alberts With Cape May Stage in Congress Hall’s Harrison Room.
The town really goes out of its way to take you on a journey through time.
The Carroll Gallery is hosting and Old Fashioned Christmas Exhibit until January 1st. Free and located within the Emlen Physick Estate, this exhibit highlights Christmas traditions, toys and gifts popular throughout the years. Enjoy a giant Christmas tree, a Department 56 Dickens Village, model trains, nostalgic photos from Christmases past and more!
The old-fashioned trolley tours complete the Victorian Christmas experience.
There are a variety of holiday trolley rides offered, including the Ghosts Of Christmas Past Trolley Ride, Holiday Lights Trolley Ride and Trolley Rides With Santa. The Ghosts Of Christmas Past Tour is perfect for adults, and a unique way to celebrate the season. What can you expect? "A member of the East Lynne Theater Company regales you with a Victorian holiday ghost tale as you ride through Cape May’s festively decorated Historic District."The Holiday Lights and Santa Trolley Rides are perfect for families. Enjoy beautifully decorated homes and businesses in Cape May's historic district while guides talk about Victorian Christmas traditions, lead sing-alongs, and play Christmas music. This 30-minute lights tour is absolutely enchanting. The Santa Trolley Tours start out with a sweet treat and visit from Santa at the Emlen Physick Estate's Carriage House. Then, kids and their families will hop onto the trolley for stories and singing with Mrs. Claus.
