New Jersey isn't universally renowned for its friendliness. In fact, two New Jersey cities (Newark and Atlantic City) were recently named among the least friendly towns in America by Conde Nast Traveler. However, locals know that the state is loaded with charming small towns where you're practically guaranteed to be greeted with a smile. One that stands out to me is Cape May.
Cape May is often hailed as the nation's oldest shore resort and it has been embracing travelers for centuries.
The town truly goes out of its way to accommodate guests.
The quaint small town has an abundance of bed & breakfasts.
There are just so many wonderful B&Bs to choose from. Coastal Living named Cape May one of the best B&B towns in the country, and each is as warm and welcoming as the next. Pictured is the Queen Victoria, Cape May's top-rated B&B on TripAdvisor.
Visit once and you'll be coming back year after year.
It doesn't take too long for locals and shop owners to remember you by name. It's also one of the happiest shore towns in the U.S. according to Coastal Living.
The architecture is straight out of a storybook, with strong Victorian influences.
Even the buildings beckon you with their charm.
The abundance of activities also adds to the friendly feel of Cape May.
How could you ever feel unwanted in a town that so clearly wants to keep you happy? Shop at the Washington Street Mall, take a trolley tour, visit the free Cape May Zoo, enjoy a show or take a trip back in time at Historic Cold Spring Village.
Did I mention the wineries and whale watching?
This man made island is a slice of paradise and the events only make it even better. Visit for Oktoberfest, Victorian Days, craft and car shows, live music and much more.
And the dining scene is spectacular.
What's friendlier than fantastic food? I'm pretty sure that serving someone a delicious meal is the universal symbol of love. Head to The Mad Batter for one of the best breakfasts in the area (and perhaps in the world). The food and atmosphere are absolutely fantastic.
Whatever you do, there's just something about Cape May that makes it feel like home away from home.
In 1976, the entire town was designated as a National Historic Landmark, one of just a handful of US places bestowed such an honor. Beloved by those who visit, it certainly exudes good old fashioned values.
