The unofficial start of summer is upon us and I couldn't be more excited. As a shore state, we're lucky to have spectacular ocean beaches, many of which we'll be visiting this weekend. The Jersey Shore is home to some of us, a home away from home for most of us, and something we too easily take for granted. We dream of tropical getaways but, our beaches beat out most. Our coastal escapes frequently top travel lists and we've made another. This one may be a bit surprising...
Wildwood Crest was just named the best summer vacation destination in the United States.
Wildwood Crest is one of New Jersey's sleepier shore towns, much more laid back than neighboring Wildwood. At 1.3 square miles and around 3,000 residents, it lacks the boardwalk amusements and abundance of eateries you'll find in many of our coastal destinations but, according to TripAdvisor, it's the place to be this summer.
How did Wildwood Crest make the cut?
The rankings were based on a variety of factors including seasonal hotel booking, vacation costs and a user survey. Rooms are selling out fast as travelers (including countless families) flock to this dry town. Besides offering easy access to bustling beaches including Cape May, Atlantic City, Wildwood and Ocean City, the town offers a variety of activities. There's a fantastic bike bath, summer concert series, outdoor fitness classes (Zumba) and free sunset celebrations with live music, variety shows, children's activities and more. You'll also find a selection of shopping and dining options including the Doo Wop Coffee Shop, Lizzy's Ice Cream and Jamaica Me Hungry. Don't forget all the fun you can have on the free beaches.
Where to stay?
There are plenty of options but El Coronado Resort is a favorite. Amenities include beach access, a pool, balconies with every room, fitness center, game room, gift shop, bbq grills and mall. The best part? All of the activities. Enjoy free poolside entertainment twice weekly, free hot dog cookies, free poolside movies, kids crafts and character visits from Talia the Mermaid and Santa! Yes, he spends his summers here. Don't miss the affordable getaway packages with amenities including breakfast, dinner and local tours.
What other New Jersey towns made the top ten?
Unsurprisingly, New Jersey had three towns that ranked as top ten summer destinations. Ocean City came in at number two, beating out Ocean City, Maryland and Cape May made the cut at number ten. Both these towns make for incredible escapes, with Ocean City's abundant opportunities for family fun and Cape May's copious amount of charm.
