In the Garden State, you don't have to go far to find some amazing places to visit. We're a densely packed state, with more people and businesses per square mile than anywhere else in the United States - and that means many people can live here their whole lives without discovering all the hidden gems in New Jersey. The best-kept secrets in New Jersey are hiding everywhere - in small towns, in big cities, and in suburbia. Where else but New Jersey can you find gourmet Japanese in a hidden storefront, a Caribbean paradise in the northeast, or an elite fine-dining restaurant on a hidden country road? There are so many non-touristy things to do and secret getaways in New Jersey, we put together a list of the best hidden gems in New Jersey for a full year of exploring.
1. Chicken Galore - Woodbridge
A hole-in-the-wall in the busy township of Woodbridge, Chicken Galore has been dishing out delicious food for decade. The signature here is the broasted chicken, with a shatteringly crisp crust, but don't miss out on the ribs, fried shrimp, or massive selection of sandwiches either. Everything is made fresh to order.
2. The Molly Pitcher Inn - Red Bank
Like a fairy tale getaway in the middle of one of New Jersey's best small towns, The Molly Pitcher Inn is a luxurious getaway located on the banks of the Navesink River. The on-site restaurant is considered one of the best in Red Bank - don't miss out on the famous Brunch.
3. Popcorn Park Animal Refuge - Forked River
A zoo with a unique purpose, Popcorn Park Animal Refuge has a huge assortment of animals - all rescued and deemed unreleasable. You'll see many residents from local farms, but also many exotic animals including capybaras, monkeys, and even lions and tigers. Make sure to drop by the peacock haven to see some of the most beautiful birds in New Jersey.
4. The Bent Spoon - Princeton
Most towns have a great ice cream parlor, but few have one like The Bent Spoon. This tiny Princeton cafe is known for its seasonal flavors, which range from local fruits to unique blends of spices and seasonings. The team is always experimenting, and their ice creams and sorbets are considered the state's best. They also recently introduced a plant-based ice cream line.
. World War 2 Lookout Tower - Cape May
Not as famous as the town's iconic lighthouse but no less stunning, this WW2 Lookout Tower served a key role during the conflict in protecting America's shores from German ships. Today, the tower can be climbed during the warmer season and contains a small museum and memorial along with one of the most beautiful views in New Jersey.
6. Columbus Farmers Market - Columbus
One of the massive farmers markets and flea markets that dot the state, the Columbus Farmers Market is a place where you can spend the whole day shopping. You can also have lunch here - the gem of the food court is The Chicken Coop, a tiny food stand serving delicious fried chicken and potato Jojos - deep-fried seasoned potato wedges.
7. The Circle - Newton
Maybe the most unexpected culinary destination in New Jersey, The Circle is located on a rural country road in an old famhouse. And inside, you'll enjoy some of the most elite seasonal cuisine in the state. Founded by two Jean-Georges veterans and focusing on local produce and small-batch foods, it's a constantly-changing culinary experience. For dessert, try the famous Birch Beer Float.
8. Colts Neck General Store and Deli - Colt's Neck
The Colts Neck General Store may the most rustic spot in New Jersey, and this charming deli and store specializes in small-batch foods. Jams, pickles, and seasonal fresh-baked goods are all essentials. At the lunch counter, indulge in a classic NJ-style pork roll, egg, and cheese.
9. Allenhurst
Are there still any quiet havens on the Jersey Shore? The tiny town of Allenhurst makes the case for yes. A historic train station leads to a charming beach club and several top-notch restaurants like beachside cafe Mister C's and Kosher steakhouse The Butcher's Steakhouse. The best part is, it's walking distance from Asbury Park.
10. Sakana - New Brunswick
The most unique all-you-can-eat experience in New Jersey, Sakana combines fine dining with a buffet. You simply order anything you want off the menu, and it'll be made fresh for you from the kitchen. Sushi, sashimi, ramen, teriyaki, and fried specialties are all on offer at this temple to everything Japanse.
11. Light Dispelling Darkness - Edison
Located in a small county park only minutes away from a popular mall, this bizarre statue has puzzled many people for years. It's actually a New Deal-era art installation, and represents the forces of knowledge triumphing over ignorance. And for another dose of culture, the park also features a live stage performing Broadway musicals during the summer.
12. Caribbean Motel - Wildwood Crest
One of the last remnants of the Doo-Wop era, the Caribbean Motel is one of the quirkiest low-cost places to stay in New Jersey. Every room has a kitschy tropical theme, and the central location makes it a perfect option for families that want a little more color in their beach getaway.
