Getting away for a weekend makes a long week feel a bit more bearable. But these days planning a trip can come with more stress than the time away can alleviate. That's why local staycations are high on our bucket list these days, especially at some charming Maine/New Hampshire border towns. Heading just a few miles away from home can often provide just the getaway we need and this town, located on the Maine/New Hampshire border is a great option. This is one of the best small towns in New Hampshire.
To find the small town or Errol you'll need to make your way to Coos County, a bit up north and right on the Maine border.
With less than 400 people who call it home, this is truly a small town. It has a little bit of everything that makes a weekend in New Hampshire lovely, starting with its small downtown. But there's a lot more to this place than meets the eye.
First, it has fantastic access to the outdoors. It helps that Umbagog Lake State Park is right here and that means proximity to one of the best lakes in the area.
There's a lot to explore here, but simply enjoying the lake is just fine with us.
For even more access to the natural surroundings here, visit Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge. This is a popular spot for bird watching and if you keep your eyes peeled you may just spot a loon, osprey, or great blue heron. There have also been sightings of Bald Eagles here. Time your visit for the spring and be sure to keep an eye out for moose!
If the great outdoors is not entirely your thing, you might consider some shopping. In Maine L.L. Bean is the name of the game, but in Errol, it's all about L.L. Cote. In addition to tons of things to browse and buy, their albino moose is a sight to behold all on its own.
If all this exploring has tired you out, plan on spending the night at a local bed and breakfast, such as 150 Main Street Lodging on the Androscoggin. It's got a long name, but it's one of the most adorable spots we've seen and it's perfectly located right in Errol.

Once you've fallen in love with little Errol make your way to the neighboring village of Dixville Notch. Site of the state's midnight vote, there's tons of history and beauty here. Stop by The Balsams Resort to see the Ballot Room where the vote takes place and then continue your outdoor adventure by heading to Dixville Notch State Park for a hike.
There's so much to do in this region that a weekend may not be long enough. But, if you're looking for a great way to get away and be back to work on time Monday morning you can't go wrong with Errol.
