Sometimes you will run across a small town in New Hampshire that doesn't appear to be much of a town at all. The town of Shelburne on the border with Maine is one such town. It's a rural community on the edges of the White Mountain National Forest and aside from one major highway passing through, it's a quiet White Mountains town. It also happens to be a place that is home to a long-distance adventure trail and a whole host of other outdoor opportunities.
The Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail winds its way across northern New Hampshire for 83 miles. This multi-use trail makes its last stop in the town of Shelburne before passing into Maine.
The Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail caters to cyclists, walkers, and skiers, and is used year-round.
The mighty Androscoggin River cuts through Shelburne. Its cool waters and beautiful scenery provide an abundance of outdoor activities.
The Androscoggin River is also a kayaker's paradise. Here, you can take a slow paddle surrounded by a stunning landscape.
In the center of the area's outdoor fun is Philbrook Farm Inn. This historic inn makes for a perfect base camp to explore the region.
Bald Cap Peak Ledges in Shelburne provides expansive views over the Androscoggin River valley. The ledges can be reached via Peabody Brook Trail.
The view of the northern Presidential Range from Shelburne is a picture-postcard scene. Here, it was captured in a 19th-century painting by John Frederick Kensett.
You won't find any trace of a sprawling metropolis here in this quiet White Mountains town, and personally, that's just the way I like it. Shelburne's location makes it a perfect location for outdoors throughout the Whites and western Maine. For more information, visit the Town of Shelburne website or the Androscoggin Valley Chamber of Commerce.
There are plenty more small towns to explore all around New Hampshire. Plan a visit to Newmarket to learn about its industrial past or check out the Lakes Region town of Meredith for a little bit of everything.
