The New Hampshire seacoast is short, but sweet. Many New Hampshire residents live in the mountains or the woods, and don't always make the trip to the Seacoast. Yet, Portsmouth, the biggest town on the seacoast is the perfect destination for a summer day trip. Portsmouth has all the elements that make a great day - wonderful food, adorable shops, beautiful scenery, and an interesting history. Set out on your day trip early, because Portsmouth is full of things to do.
If you arrive in time for breakfast, head to The Friendly Toast on Congress Street in Portsmouth.
After eating all that great food at The Friendly Toast, you'll probably need a stroll. Take a walk down Congress Street toward the water. Along the way, enjoy the charming local shops and art galleries.
From Congress Street, take a right on Pleasant Street, and a left on State Street, which will bring you to the beautiful Prescott Park.
This gorgeous garden on the waterfront is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a treat. But make sure to walk around this huge park, finding all its hidden gems.
With the meeting of land and sea, Prescott Park is breathtaking.
From Prescott Park, it is a short walk to Strawbery Banke Museum, a historical museum named after the oldest settlement in Portsmouth. There you can learn what life was like in New Hampshire nearly 400 years ago. Even if you don't want to pay admission to the museum, a walk through the neighborhood will give you a glimpse of beautiful historic houses.
Enjoy more of Portsmouth's beautiful streets as you walk toward Bow Street, which will take you to the docks and some of Portsmouth's best waterfront dining.
Surf Portsmouth is the perfect place to enjoy a drink and a wonderful view.
As well as wonderful food.
However, lunch in Portsmouth can be as formal or informal as you want. There are plenty of places to grab a quick lobster roll or slice of pizza.
During the evening there is plenty to do in Portsmouth. You could check out a show at the Seacoast Repertory Theater.
Or treat yourself to a taste test at Portsmouth Brewery.
No matter which activities you choose, Portsmouth has plenty of offer. This town is perfect to get lost and go exploring on a beautiful summer day.
